BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Marilyn Kemp Weidner was a noted conservator of works of art on paper.  She was born in Floral Park, New York, on January 10, 1928, the daughter of Winifred Simpson and Arthur Kemp.  Mr. Kemp was a Wall Street broker who loved museums and encouraged his daughter to work in them.  Marilyn Kemp graduated from Hofstra University with a major in French and a minor in art history.

Upon graduation from college, Marilyn work as an assistant to Dorothy Dudley, the registrar at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.  Marilyn then became registrar at the Brooklyn Museum.  While there, she attended a course in painting conservation and became interested in the conservation field.  Shortly thereafter, she married Roswell Weidner, an artist and art teacher in Philadelphia, and moved to that city.  Having decided to concentrate on conserving prints and other art on paper, Mrs. Weidner commuted to New York City in order to study with Minna Horowitz Nagel at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  As well, she studied Japanese mounting techniques with Takashi Sugiura at the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C.  Upon finishing her studies, Mrs. Weidner set up a private studio in Philadelphia.  She responded to the call to assist with conservation efforts after the disastrous Arno River flood in Florence, Italy, in 1966.

In the early 1970s, Marilyn Weidner started the conservation program in Cooperstown, New York (the program later moved to Buffalo).  In 1971 and 1972, she planned seminars held at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Wisconsin, bringing together paper conservators and paper scientists for the first time.  In 1972, she invented the suction table to aid in the treatment and removal of stains from art on paper that could not be immersed in a chemical bath, especially pastels and water sensitive media.  In 1977 she started the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA), a non-profit laboratory which provided conservation services to small museums which did not have their own conservation facilities.  The CCAHA also trained conservation interns and technicians.  To celebrate its 25th anniversary, the center established the Marilyn Weidner Professional Endowment Fund to provide money for professional development opportunities for conservators and interns at the center.  Mrs. Weidner left the CCAHA in 1984 and returned to private practice.  During all these years, she lectured and wrote about art conservation and taught conservators how to properly use the moisture chamber/suction table.

Marilyn Weidner was an honorary Fellow of the IIC (International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works), a member of the Washington Conservation Guild, and a Fellow and honorary member of the AIC (American Institute for Conservation).  She was listed in Who’s Who in American Art, Who’s Who of American Women, and Who’s Who in the East.

While working as a conservator, Marilyn Weidner raised two daughters and helped her husband restore an old home in the Society Hill area of Philadelphia.  Roswell Weidner always supported his wife’s studies and career.  In retirement, Mrs. Weidner shared a home with a daughter’s family in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.  There she served as caretaker of her husband’s paintings, pastels, prints, and drawings.  She liked to write and read as well.  Mrs. Weidner died on November 16, 2017.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

These papers document the conservation career of Marilyn Kemp Weidner.  Included are correspondence, reports, minutes of meetings, articles, trade catalogs, and other business papers.  The records cover her private practice as well as her years at the Conservation Center for Art and Historic Artifacts (CCAHA) in Philadelphia.  Her invention of the moisture chamber/suction table is documented.  Other records relate to her membership in various conservation organizations such as the International Institute for Conservation (IIC) and the American Institute for Conservation (AIC).  Also documented are her efforts to begin the graduate conservation program in Cooperstown, New York.

The collection also includes her reports of treatments performed in her private practice from the late 1950s through the early 21st century.  These reports are filed by client name.  Typically, the files include a brief description of the piece to be conserved, what work she performed, correspondence, and copies of bills.  Sometimes there are photos or slides.  Two of her larger clients were Ephrata Cloister and Princeton University.  She also worked for other museums and many private clients.  The Ephrata files contain scraps of paper and cloth removed from the items which she conserved for that museum.  Also included is her accession book, listing treatments by year, and slides of the treatments.  The group of slides includes pictures of her moisture chamber/suction table, illustrations of various techniques, and pictures of Mrs. Weidner in various labs.

Treatment inquiries: work not done

Series XIV: Slides and photographs

Note: Most of the slides are of treatments performed by Marilyn Weidner, but others demonstrate her moisture chamber/suction table, illustrate specific treatment techniques, or show her at work in various labs.  The treatment slides are arranged by accession number whenever possible.  However, some slides are arranged by name of client because it was not possible to ascertain the accession number (for example, when Mrs. Weidner treated several fraktur for one client).  A group of unidentified or unsorted slides comes at the end.  Some slides are also found in the treatment files in Series XIII.
