BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Todhunter, Inc. was founded by Arthur Todhunter, who emigrated to the United States from England in 1909.  He initially concentrated on importing paneled rooms, mantelpieces, fireplace equipment, hardware, and lighting fixtures from England.  Soon, he was having reproductions from antiques made specifically for him rather than simply relying on products made by others.  Todhunter contracted with woodworkers to make mantelpieces and other woodwork.  His factory for manufacturing fine metalwork, in operation from 1914-1942, was located in Long Island City, New York, but his sales shop was in New York City.  Todhunter, Inc., which he incorporated in 1926, sold weathervanes, signs, lighting fixtures for indoors and outdoors, and decorative metal work such as hinges and door handles, as well as mantelpieces, fire backs, andirons, fenders, fire tools, and other fireplace accessories.  During World War II, the business sold only existing stock as it was impossible to get metal to make new goods.  The business is believed to have closed around 1955.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection consists almost entirely of plans and drawings for mantelpieces, though there are some blueprints, as well.  Most of the plans are ground plans, that is, bird’s eye views of mantels. Some plans also include elevation or section (profile) drawings.  As well, there are drawings of lighting fixtures, metal balusters and banisters, a sign for Mount Vision, two weathervanes, an andiron, a brass light switch plate, a pine table, and full size drawings for a settle.  Also in the collection are plans for paneled rooms and a working drawing for the construction of a fireplace, the flue of which was to use Todhunter dampers.  A few photographs of lighting fixtures, a bell, a doorknocker, and a chair are included as are some trade cards and catalogs of weathervanes, lighting fixtures, and colonial hardware.

Many of the plans came in envelopes, and the envelopes have been retained.  Any important data on the envelopes which was not also found on the drawings has been added to the item description.  Most of the plans are on tracing paper, with a few on coated paper.

ORGANIZATION

Mantel plans are arranged in stock number order, and within each number, alphabetically by job name; this arrangement reflects way the collection was received.  Usually the job name corresponded with the name of the owner of the house where work was done, but sometimes it matched the name of the architect or builder, even when the home owner was identified.  The disadvantage of this arrangement is that it separates one customer’s name in the listing when that customer ordered more than one style of mantel from Todhunter.  As all names written on a plan have been recorded in the item descriptions—that is, names of owners, architects, and builders—a search can discover whether a particular customer placed more than one order.  The Stacy order was kept together since all those plans were in one envelope.  The few mantels that did not have stock numbers are at the end of the mantel section.  Plans for light fixtures, signs, weathervanes, paneled rooms, and other non-mantel drawings, plus the photos and trade catalogs, are filed after the mantel plans.
