BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Mary Harrod Northend was born in Salem,
Massachusetts, the daughter of William Dummer and Susan Stedman Harrod Northend,
and a descendant of several old Massachusetts families. She suffered from poor health during her
childhood and was not able to attend school regularly. Even so, she became interested in writing,
honed her skills, and became a very prolific and popular author. She wrote on a wide variety of topics, mostly
for magazines, but also penned eleven books.
Miss Northend was a noted authority on colonial architecture and customs
and had many photographs taken of old homes and antiques to illustrate her
articles and books. Reportedly, she left
a collection of over 30,000 pictures when she died. Unfortunately, the location of most is
unknown, though
SCOPE
AND CONTENT
The Northend Collection contains glass
plate negatives, and the corresponding study prints, related to architecture,
interiors, furniture, ceramics, clothing, glass, lighting devices, and
metalwork. A small section shows people
wearing colonial dress at costume parties and women and girls posing with
spinning wheels at kitchen hearths. The
Colonial Revival style is present in many of the furnishings and interiors in
the photographs. The collection
primarily documents New England, and the majority of the photographs were
probably taken in
The collection also includes copies of a
few of Miss Northend’s articles, as well as some biographical information about
her. Two hand-tinted photographs bearing
Miss Northend’s signature are also in the collection.
ORGANIZATION
Series I, the original glass plate
negatives (as well as some negatives which are not glass) are divided by size
(5x7, 6.5x8.5, 8x10) and are then in numerical order, with unnumbered negatives
at the end of the series (these unnumbered negatives have been assigned
letters). The descriptions are in
numerical order; those which are 5x7 or 6x8 are so noted. (If no size is given, the negative is 8x10.)
The study prints (Series II) are arranged
in categories by subject topic, such as architecture, room view, and furniture.
Series III includes biographical
information about Miss Northend, copies of some of her magazine articles, and
hand-tinted photographs from her studio.
Occasionally, the same number has been
assigned to two different negatives; letters a and b have been added to
distinguish them. Some of the negatives
have more than one image on them.
LANGUAGE
OF MATERIALS
The materials are mostly pictorial in
nature, but written material is in English.
RESTRICTIONS
ON ACCESS

prints must be viewed first. Use of

Series
I: Glass Plate Negatives
Note:
All negatives are described in numerical order, although they are filed by
size. The number in the first column is
the negative number, along with the size if the negative is 5x7 or 6x8 (if no
size is given, the negative is 8x10); then comes a brief description of the
photo (additional information is sometimes found on the envelope); the names in
the last column identify the location or the owner of the item or home being
photographed.
The
Downs Collection also has a number of prints for which it does not own the
corresponding negatives. The description
of these prints follows the numerical list of glass plate negatives.
