BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Margaret Dunham Anderson Fikioris came to Winterthur Museum in 1967 as textile conservator; she retired in 1990.  She received her B.A. from the College of Wooster in 1961 and M.A. in art history and archaeology from Columbia University in 1964.  She trained in textile conservation under Joseph V. Columbus and James W. Rice at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C.

Fikioris was part of a movement within the International Council of Museums to establish a committee in the United States to coordinate disaster planning and response teams.  She wrote books and articles, gave many lectures on the subject of textile conservation, taught in the Winterthur/University of Delaware Program in Art Conservation, and served as acting textile curator at Winterthur.  She also taught at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.  She served as a consultant in collections care and storage.

Fikioris was a member of the Textile Conservation Group of New York, the Washington Conservation Guild, the Decorative Arts Society, and International Institute for Conservation, the Textile Arts Society, and the American Institute for Conservation. One of her interests was documenting the design sources for window treatments, bed dressings, and upholstery, 1600-1850.

Margaret was married to Dimitrios Fikioris.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection consists chiefly of research files accumulated by Margaret Fikioris while she was textile conservator at Winterthur Museum.  Her interests in national disaster planning and historic design sources for window treatments and bed hangings are highlighted.  Copies of Fikioris’ lectures and papers are also present.  Student notes and textbooks from her studies under James Rice at the Textile Museum form part of the collection as well.  (Some of her papers were determined to be office records and were therefore transferred to Winterthur Archives.)

ORGANIZATION

Papers are in five series: I. general files; II. disaster planning files; III. correspondence; VI. books, articles, and pamphlets; and VII.  Photographs and slides.

Textile curator and Winterthur Conservation Department files (formerly series IV and V) were transferred to Winterthur Archives in spring 2019, and are no longer a part of this collection.  Additional Winterthur information might also be found in Series I, as it was not always possible to isolate the Winterthur information into series IV or V.

LANGUAGE OF MATERIALS

Most of the materials are in English.  Some books and pamphlets are in Swedish, Italian, and other European languages.

RESTRICTIONS ON ACCESS
