BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Walter C. Green lived at Benedict Chambers, 3 Spruce St. in Boston and owned a building at 42 East 9th St. in New York City.  Walter Cooper Green was born in New Hampshire in 1799, the son of Susanna Hayes and Dr. Ezra Green.  He attended Exeter Academy and then read law.  However, he eventually joined an older brother working as a commission merchant in New York City.  When that business failed, Walter set up as a metal broker, in which profession he found success.  Walter married Almira Hammond (died 1847), and they had two children, Sarah H. Green and Walter Hammond Green (died 1857).  At some point Walter Green moved to Boston, where he died in April 1875.  Among his friends, he was known for his collection of Italian art; he was a member of the New England Historical and Genealogical Society.
