BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Alfred John Jakstas was an art conservator, working first in Boston and then in Chicago.  He was born in Boston on October 30, 1916, the son of Walter John and Julia Barkevich Jakstats.  He graduated from Harvard in 1938.  An interest in both science and art history, plus the influence of several Harvard professors, led him to an apprenticeship in conservation at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard.  From 1941 to 1961, he was the conservator at the Isabella Stewart Gardiner Museum in Boston; from1961 until 1981, he was chief conservator at the Art Institute of Chicago.  As well, he maintained a private conservation practice and served as a consultant to a number of museums.

Mr. Jakstas was a fellow of the International Institute for the Conservation of Museum Objects (IIC) and a fellow of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC).  He married Valerie Jevaraus in 1942, and they had two daughters, Janet and Julianne.  Mr. Jakstas died on March 28, 2000, in Arizona.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The bulk of the collection is comprised of treatment reports.  These include notes on condition, a description of the work done on the painting, photographs taken before and after treatment, and a few x-rays.  (Note: most of the treatment records are filed under artist’s name, not owner’s name.)  The collection also includes correspondence and notes about painting techniques, which were probably taken while Jakstas was an apprentice at the Fogg Museum.

ORGANIZATION

The collection is divided into two series: I. Correspondence and miscellaneous files, and II. Treatment reports.  Most of the treatment reports are arranged by artist, with a few file folders arranged by owner (these are at the beginning of that series).
