BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

The Brodhead family represented by these papers lived in Marbletown, Ulster County, New York.  The progenitor of the family was Captain Daniel Brodhead I.   He married Ann Tye; they had sons named Daniel II (b.ca.1661, died unmarried in 1690), Charles I (b.ca.1663), and Richard (b. 1666).  The Brodhead family emigrated from England in 1664, the captain being part of an expedition sent to New York by the Duke of York.  Captain Brodhead was born in 1629 in London, England.  He died July 14, 1667, in Esopus, New York.  His widow Ann married twice more.  None of the papers deal directly with Daniel I or with Ann.

The Brodhead Family Association has published many volumes of genealogy, following all the different lines of descent from Daniel I and Ann Tye Brodhead.  This biographical statement will follow only those lines which appear to be represented in these papers.  The family name is sometimes spelled Broadhead, but for the sake of consistency, the spelling of Brodhead is used in this finding aid.  Many of the other names which also appear can be spelled more than one way; the spellings used are those which seem to be most common.

Richard Brodhead, the first Brodhead to be born in New York, married Magdelene Jansaen in 1692, and after her death he married Wyntie Pawling in 1698.  He had eleven children, but they do not seem to be mentioned in any of the documents in this collection.  Richard died around 1758.  He had been a captain in the Ulster County militia.

Charles Brodhead I married Maria (b. 1674), the daughter of Maria Ten Eyck and Wessel Ten Broeck, on November 14, 1693,.  Their children were Daniel III, Charles II, Mary (or Maria), and two sons named Wessel (one of whom died as an infant).  Charles also bore the title of captain in the Ulster County militia.  Maria died July 9, 1717; Charles I died March 12, 1724.  Charles and his brother Richard were given a grant of land which was much later covered by the waters of the Ashokan Reservoir.

Daniel III (b.1694) married Marritje Cox Constable (daughter of Bregjen Middagh and Samuel Cox, widow of Jan Constable) in 1755; their sons were Daniel IV (b.1756) and Samuel (b.1758).  Following in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps, Daniel III was a captain in the local militia.  He died in 1759.

Charles II (b. 1696) married Marritje (or Maria) Hardenburgh (baptized February 1, 1702, the daughter of Johannes and Catharina Rutsen Hardenburgh, also spelled Hardenberg) on December 23, 1725,   They did not have children.  Charles was one of the founders of the Reformed Dutch Church of Marbletown.  He died August 14, 1774, leaving his property to his brother Wessel and to his nieces and nephews (children of his brother Daniel III and his sister Mary DeWitt).

Mary (b. 1699, also known as Maria) married Johannes De Witt on June 27, 1724.  Their children were Ann, Charles, Andres, and Maria.  Various members of the DeWitt family are mentioned in some of the documents in this collection.  Mary died in 1755.

Wessel (b.1703) married Catrina Du Bois (baptized October 31, 1714, the daughter of Rachel Hasbrouck and Louis Du Bois).   Wessel died in 1774.  Wessel and Catrina had two sons, Charles III (b. 1742), and Lewis (b.1754), and 8 daughters.  In his will, Wessel left his sawmill and blacksmith shop to his sons.  A branch of the Wessel Brodhead family later moved to Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  Their papers are in the library of Lehigh University.

Daniel IV (b.1756, son of Daniel and Marritje Cox Brodhead), married Blandina Elmendorf (daughter of Jonathan and Magdalena Smedes Elmendorf) in 1778.  They had seven children: Daniel V (b.1778), Magdelene (b.1780), Jonathan (b.1783), Elsje (b.1786), Conradt (b.1790), Lucas (b.1793), and Peter Edmundus (b.1797).  In some of the papers in this collection, Daniel IV was referred to as Daniel Sr., and his son Daniel V was Daniel, Jr.  Daniel IV died in 1831 in Marbletown.

Daniel V (Daniel, Jr.) was born in 1778, married Eliza Alida Moore in 1808, and died in 1823.  He served in the War of 1812, was a blacksmith, and ran a sawmill.  His brother Jonathan was born in 1783, married Sarah Hardenberg in 1806, and died in 1871.  He was postmaster of Brodhead Bridge.  Their brother Conradt was born in 1790, married Rachel Goetschius, and died in 1874.  He was a surveyor.  Lucas was born in 1793, married Mary Cordelia Upshaw Price, and died in 1849.  Lucas graduated from Union College in Schenectady in 1816 and moved to Kentucky in 1820.

Later generations of the Brodhead family also appear in these papers.  Daniel was a popular name for boys in the Brodhead family; occasionally, there were first cousins born within a year or two of each other who were given that name.  Therefore, it is almost impossible to determine to just which Daniel a particular document refers.

The Kettel/Kettle family of Marbletown is represented in these papers as well.  Jeremy Kettle, Sr., was married first to Catharina Guderis, and they had one son, Jeremy, Jr. (baptized ca. April 24, 1675).  His second wife was Elisabeth Claessen; their three children were Rutsjert (Richard, baptized July 4, 1697), Susanna (baptized July 14, 1700), and Elisabeth (baptized. October 25, 1702).  Jeremy Sr. died sometime in 1704.  Among the executors of his will was his friend and neighbor Charles Brodhead I.   A copy of his will appears in Ulster County, N.Y. Probate Records…, volume 1, p. 68-69 (New York: Gustave Anjou, 1906).

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection contains receipts, bills, deeds, wills, tax lists, and letters, most of which are related to the Brodhead or Kettel families of Marbletown, Ulster County, New York.  Some of the papers are specifically related to the town government of Marbletown and Kingston, New York, or to the Reformed Dutch Church or the North Dutch Church, both in Marbletown.  A few documents relate to slaves owned by members of the Brodhead family.  A partial document records the beginning of court martial proceedings held in 1803 in Rochester for the regiment of Colonel Frederick Wesbrook.  Charles Brodhead served as an executor of the estate of Jeremy Kettel, and the Kettel papers in the collection relate to settling Jeremy’s estate.

Among other items in the collection are a broadside announcing an evening of entertainment to benefit the North Marbletown Church; an envelope from the Civil War with a picture of “John Bull Making His Speech to King Cotton”; a medicinal recipe; a tally of votes for Governor Clinton of New York; an account book of an unknown person who received credit for spinning and weaving; and records related to horse breeding.

Most of the 17th century documents, and some of the others, are faded or stained and are therefore difficult to read.  Some documents are in Dutch.  Transcriptions and translations of some of the earlier documents are included in the collection.
