BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Charles Henry Hart was a noted art expert of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 4, 1847, to Julia Leavey and Samuel Hart.  He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania law school in 1869 and practiced law for the next 25 years.  In 1894, he suffered in a railway accident and decided to give up his law practice and devote himself to art, a topic in which he had been interested for some time.  He became a noted authority on portraiture, especially the works of Gilbert Stuart.  Hart delighted in being able to expose fraudulent attributions.

Hart was a noted author, penning a number of books and articles about art and history.  He served as a director for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts from 1882 until 1902.  He was also the chairman of the Retrospective American Art exhibit at the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893.  He and his committee selected representative American art from before 1876 for exhibition at the fair.  He was a member of a number of organizations, including the American Historical Association, several state historical societies, the Philadelphia Society of Etchers, and the Essex Institute.

Charles Hart was married three times.  His first wife was Armine Nixon, the daughter of John Nixon and a great-granddaughter of Robert Morris, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.  She died in 1897.  He married Marianne Livingstone Phillips of Germantown, Philadelphia, on September 8, 1906.   She was the daughter of William Lacey Phillips and was about 22 when she married.  Charles and Marianne had a son, Charles Henry Hart, Jr., born in 1907 or 1908.  At some point, this couple divorced.  On December 5, 1912, Hart married Anita Beatriz Arabe, the daughter of Muriel Everton (of New Orleans) and Don Alfonso Gonzales y Arade of Spain.  The elder Charles Hart died in New York City on July 29, 1918; his obituary may be found in the New York Times of July 31, 1918, on page 9.  After Hart’s death, his widow Anita lived for a time in England to pursue a career as an actress.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection reflects Charles Hart’s interest in art, his efforts at expertising, and his attempts to uncover fraudulent attributions.  The first series of the collection consists of letters written to Charles Henry Hart about several silhouette artists, together with notes and articles about a number of different American artists.  The articles, at least, were collected by someone other than Hart as they all postdate his death.  The notes were either made by Theodore Bolton or were taken from works by him.  The silhouette artists in whom Hart was interested were William H. Brown, Augustin Edouart, and William James Hubard.  Hart corresponded with family members and friends in order to learn more information about the men.  A letter from John Sartain concerned work he had done for Hubard.  The collection includes some reproductions and photographs of silhouettes, but no originals.  It is not known who put this first series of the collection together.

The chief contents of the second series of the collection are letters from Thomas B. Clarke to Hart, mostly about American art, from 1907-1918.  (Clarke was a New York City resident who collected American art and Chinese porcelain.)  Also found in this part of the collection are letters from Hart’s young son Charles Henry Hart, Jr.  Some of the letters, particularly those written in 1917-1918, are illustrated, chiefly with soldiers, sailors, and other patriotic images.  Other items in this series pertain to the widowed Mrs. Hart, and include insurance papers, an inventory of her apartment (which she planned to rent furnished), and some of her correspondence.  Also found are poems and essays, recipes for cosmetics, an account from 1827 pertaining to Henry Nixon (probably an ancestor of the first Mrs. Hart), undated programs from a play in which Anita Hart acted, some financial documents, and other miscellaneous documents.

The third series, like the first series, includes materials which post-date Hart’s death (and even a few which post-date Thomas B. Clarke’s death).  The focus of the third series is on artists, primarily American, but including Jean-Antoine Houdon and Sir Joshua Reynolds.  These files include a great deal of information about the works of Gilbert Stuart.  Some of the files are arranged by subjects of portraits (for example, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin) rather than by artist.  As well, this series includes portrait prints, photos of portraits, and pictures clipped from magazines.  Also found as part of this series is additional correspondence of Charles Hart and Thomas B. Clarke, including correspondence with Lawrence Park and Mantle Fielding.  Most of the letters are written to Hart, some are addressed to Clarke, and the series includes correspondence between Hart and Clarke.  Most of the correspondence is about portraits.  A few miscellaneous publications rounds out the series.

ORGANIZATION

The papers are in three series, divided by accession number.   Because the papers came from such different sources, it was decided not to merge like materials from the different series.

Series I: Accession 02x84: The correspondence of Charles Henry Hart is followed by reproductions of silhouettes, and then by information about other artists, filed alphabetically by artist’s last name.

Series II: Accession 08x1120: The correspondence of Thomas B. Clarke with Hart is followed by other correspondence, materials relating to Hart’s widow, and a bill dated 1827 addressed to Mr. Nixon, probably an ancestor of the first Mrs. Hart.  The Clarke correspondence is arranged chronologically.

Series III: Accession 10x74: These papers are arranged by first by material about artists, then subjects of portraits, then prints, followed by correspondence, and publications.

LANGUAGE OF MATERIALS

The materials are in English and French.

RESTRICTIONS ON ACCESS

Collection is open to the public.  Copyright restrictions may apply.

PROVENANCE

Accession 02x84: gift of Kevin Mullen.

Accession 08x120: purchased from Charles Apfelbaum.

Accession 10x74: gift of Metropolitan Museum of Art.  According to a note sent to a Met employee, these papers were originally given to the Frick Art Reference Library, which eventually returned them to Charles H. Hart, Jr.  At some point, they may have been in the possession of Thomas B. Clarke, since the group includes letters to Clarke and there are materials which postdate Hart’s death.
