BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Wallace Nutting was born in 1861 in Marlborough, Massachusetts, to Elizabeth Sanborn Fifield and Albion Nutting.  After attending Harvard University and a theological seminary, he was ordained a Congregational minister in 1888, the same year in which he married Mariet Griswold Caswell of Colrain, Massachusetts.  They had no children.

In 1904, an illness prompted Nutting to leave the ministry.  He had already become interested in photography and had sold some of his prints.  As a photographer, he specialized in rural New England scenes and colonial American interiors, capitalizing on the interest in the Colonial Revival movement.  The photographs were hand-tinted, were extremely popular, and sold widely; he moved his business to Framingham, Massachusetts, in 1912.  Nutting wrote eighteen books and numerous magazine articles, using his photographs as illustrations.  Probably his best known publication was Furniture Treasury, a work of three volumes, published in 1928 (volumes 1 and 2) and 1933 (volume 3).  The volumes contained over 5000 photographs and drawings of early American furniture, mirrors, and clocks.  It is still regarded as an important reference work, although errors have been found in the text.

Nutting began collecting antiques to use as props in his photographs.  He bought several old homes, furnished them, used them as settings for some of his photos, and also opened the houses to the public for a fee.  He referred to them as the “Wallace Nutting Chain of Colonial Houses.”  He later sold part of his antique collection to the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Connecticut.  Nutting’s interest in antiques and the craftsmanship that had gone into their making led him to start furniture and hardware reproduction businesses.  In both, the reproductions were largely made using the old handcraft methods, which meant limited production and high prices.  The furniture business lost money but was supported by sales of Nutting’s very popular photographs.  Nutting also sold a line of silhouettes which had been drawn by one of his employees, Ernest John Donnelly, who was Nutting’s bookkeeper and aide, as well as an artist.

Nutting died of cancer in 1941.  His wife died in 1944 and left the Nutting picture business to Ernest Donnelly and Esther Svenson.  Ms. Svenson had been the office manager and was in charge of the photographic colorists.  She bought Donnelly’s share of the business in 1946 and continued it until 1952.  Later she ordered that Nutting’s original glass plate negatives be destroyed.  Svenson died sometime after 1971.  After Donnelly had sold his interest in the Nutting business, he worked for antiques dealer David Stockwell and then opened his own antique business.  Later, he moved to Ireland, where he died in 1973.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection includes drawings, templates, blueprints, and photographs from the Wallace Nutting Old America Co. of Framingham, Massachusetts.  One photograph is of the men and women who worked for him in July 1928.  On the back of the photo, the men are identified, but most of the women are not.  Another photo is entitled “Ready for the Afternoon”; it is an example of the sort of photos which Nutting sold.  One blueprint is for a Chippendale chair; the others are floor plans of the Hazen House, the Cutler-Bartlet House, and the Wentworth-Gardner House, all of which were restored by Nutting.  The templates were used in the furniture workshop.  Almost all of them are guidelines for carving decoration on the pieces made there.  Some, however, are outlines for the shapes of legs, bonnet tops, or table aprons.  A few of the templates indicate the stock number of the piece for which it was intended.

Almost all the drawings in this collection were executed by Ernest John Donnelly for the third volume of Wallace Nutting’s Furniture Treasury (copyright 1933).  A few drawings appeared in volume 2 of Furniture Treasury or in Nutting’s Pennsylvania Beautiful.  Nutting identified himself as the artist for the latter book, although the drawings in this collection which appeared in that book have the name E. Blanche Brown written on the back.  Nutting did not identify the artist of the drawings for volume 2 of Furniture Treasury; they may have been executed by Donnelly.  The drawings include carved shell and rosette decorations, finials, clock hands, bed posts, and pieces of furniture.  As well, there are several silhouettes which were not used in volume 3, but may be the originals of the silhouettes which Nutting sold as part of his picture business.

As well, the collection includes an illustrated catalog of Windsor furniture, two price lists, and photos of furniture made by the Wallace Nutting, Inc.

ORGANIZATION

The papers are divided into five series:

I.                    General photographs;

II.                 Drawings;

III.               Templates;

IV.              Blueprints; and

V.                 Catalogs, Price lists, and catalog photos.

Box 1 contains general photographs (Series I) and drawings (Series II).  Boxes 2 and 3 contain drawings (Series II).  Box 4 holds oversize drawings and oversize templates (Series II and III).  Box 5 contains small templates (Series III).  Box 6 holds medium size templates (Series III) and blueprints (Series IV).  Box 7 the catalogs, price lists, and catalog photos (Series V).

Most of the drawings were published in the third volume of Nutting’s Furniture Treasury; a few were published in Furniture Treasury, volume 2, and Pennsylvania Beautiful.  In the descriptions, if no title is specified, then the drawing was published in volume 3 of Furniture Treasury; the page number is given.  If a drawing were published in either of the other two volumes, then the title and page number are given.  A very few drawings were not found in any of these three books, nor in the first volume of Furniture Treasury.  None of Wallace Nutting’s other books were examined to see if the drawings were published elsewhere.

Normally, each description would be listed by the Downs Collection accession number.  However, since almost all the items came with museum accession numbers already clearly indicated on them, they were used for primary identification purposes.  The photographs are numbered 83.177.1 and Downs accession 02x63 (this photograph was never part of the museum collection); the drawings are numbered 83.177.2-.213, and .215-.219; the blueprints are numbered 83.177.220-226; the templates for furniture are numbered 83.177.214, .227-.254, .256-.303, and .305-.404.  (Numbers 83.177.255 and .304 were either not used or were not transferred to the Downs Collection.)
