BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Margaret Berwind Schiffer was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.  She attended Shipley School and Harcum Junior College.  Mrs. Schiffer has been a member of the Chester County Historical Society, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the Women’s Committee of the Academy of Fine Arts, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, and the Society of Architectural Historians.

She has written at least seven books: Historical Needlework of Pennsylvania; Furniture and Its Makers of Chester County, Pennsylvania; Survey of Chester County, Pennsylvania, Architecture, 17th, 18th, and 19th Centuries; Chester County, Pennsylvania, Inventories, 1684-1850; Arts and Crafts of Chester County, Pennsylvania; Christmas Ornaments: A Festive Study; and Holidays: Toys and Decorations.

Margaret Schiffer is married to Herbert F. Schiffer, an author of books about decorative arts and an antiques dealer in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection includes notes and photographs gathered for the books written by Mrs. Schiffer, many notes relating to the history of Chester County, Pennsylvania, and notes about Christmas celebrations and decorations.  The collection also includes a few pieces of correspondence relating to the publishing of her books and drafts of some of them.  In addition, there are notes for an article about silver written by Mr. Schiffer, some photographs that relate to his antique business, and a few personal papers and photos.  Most of the materials pertain specifically to Mrs. Schiffer’s books, and there are also pictures of European needlework and furniture.

Included with the collection are a number of boxes of note cards, most of which were used to index various lists, such as tax lists from Pennsylvania.  Unfortunately, the original boxes containing these cards were usually not labeled, and it was not always clear what the cards referred to.  Furthermore, a number of the cards were not in their original boxes, but were located elsewhere, and it was not always possible to discern where they should be filed.  The materials about people and inventories have been placed in the same series because at least some of the information about people came from inventories; however, it is not known for certain that the materials were gathered at the same time or that they were intended to be used together.

ORGANIZATION

The papers came as two different gifts and are arranged in six series, the first four of which

correspond to books written by Mrs. Schiffer.  The sixth series contains the papers which were part of the second gift.

IV.              Inventories and People;
