BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
John Samuel Hayward (1778-1822) was an English
artist. His father was a floor cloth
manufacturer, and John Samuel succeeded his father in running the
business. But his love was for painting,
particularly watercolors. Although an
amateur, he exhibited forty-seven works at the Royal Academy from 1798 to 1816,
and was secretary of the Sketching Society.
He traveled in Italy, France, Scotland, Wales, several parts of England,
and Ireland.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Bills sent to John Samuel Hayward, prints of his
drawings, and a catalog for the auction of his library. The three bills, dated 1820-1821, are charges
for printing proofs and engraved copies of some of his drawings. Two bills were from McQueen & Co., one
dated May-Nov. 1820 (for proofs of the River Lethe), and the other Jan. 19,
1821 (for prints of the River Lethe).
The third bill, which includes a short letter, was from F. C. Lewis and
was for engraving Tivoli, Albano, and Mola de Greta. Included with this is a bill from J. Fisher,
the printer.
The auction, conducted by Mr. Christie, was held
February 26-28, 1823, and included a large number of prints, drawings, and
books on fine arts, travel, and other subjects.
Some of the drawings sold at the auction were by Hayward. The auction, which included picture frames
and Hayward’s drawing equipment, was held to settle his estate. The eleven prints from Hayward’s drawings are
scenes of France and Italy, primarily views of villages and towns.
