BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Bowen & Swan was a furniture manufacturing firm located in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts.  It also sold upholstery goods, looking glasses, picture frames, coffins, coffin plates, and burial clothes which had been made by others.  The firm was run by Henry A. Bowen and Henry S. Swan.

Henry Albert Bowen was originally from Wilmington, Vermont.  On January 1, 1857, he married Mary Francelia Fuller (1839-1924) in North Adams, Mass., where he had been a cabinetmaker.  The couple moved to Shelburne Falls shortly after their marriage.  In 1862, Bowen entered into a partnership with Henry S. Swan, which last about two years, apparently dissolving in early 1865.  After the partnership ended, Bowen manufactured cardboard boxes; he died on May 18, 1910 in Shelburne Falls.

Henry Salmon Swan was born in Halifax, Vermont, on February 16, 1829, the son of Miriam Harris and Salmon Swan.  Henry married Mary Sophia Wilder in September 1852.  He was a carpenter and house builder before going into partnership with Bowen.  He was also an undertaker.  Swan kept the furniture business after the partnership with Bowen was dissolved; later his son Herbert (1857-1943) helped manage the business.  Swan died January 24, 1900, in Shelburne Falls.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

A collection of papers, chiefly bills, from the furniture retailers Henry A. Bowen and Henry S. Swan, and from their short-lived partnership of Bowen & Swan, of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, 1858-1868.  Most of the papers are bills sent to these men from other companies for the purchase of coffin plates, hardware (such as casters, hinges, tacks, and screws), upholstery fabrics, paints, varnishes, picture frame molding, lumber, but especially furniture.  They bought chairs of many sorts (high, sewing, arm, garden, rocking, dining, office, Quincy, Windsor, etc.), bedsteads, cribs, wash stands, teapoys, tables, work stands, light stands, sinks, bureaus, whatnots, crickets, and sofas.  A few of the bills are probably personal, as they include charges for foodstuffs, clothing, and household goods.  Bowen’s papers are from the years 1858-1865 (few after 1861); Swan’s papers are dated 1865-1867; and the papers for Bowen & Swan span 1862-1865 (with one from 1868).  A number of the bills have printed billheads, but most are not illustrated.  The collection includes a printed billhead for H.S. Swan.

Also included in the collection are a partial inventory for one of the businesses (whether Bowen & Swan, Bowen, or Swan is not known), tax receipts, an insurance policy, business licenses, shipping receipts, price lists from other companies (for mirror frames, picture frame moldings, and store stools), and trade cards from other companies.  The shipping receipts are for shipping furniture by railway, although it is not altogether clear whether the goods are being shipped to or by Bowen & Swan.  The receipts usually specify what is being shipped, i.e. whether chairs, sofas, bedsteads, etc.  As well, the collection includes about a half dozen letters written to the firm of Childs, Cotton & Co., also of Shelburne Falls, about purchasing buggy wheels.  A letter from the actress and theater manager Laura Keene concerns an English actor named Matty[?] Verne.  Because the letter begins “Sir,” and there is no envelope, it is not known to whom this was sent.
