BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Daniel Farber was a business executive, civic leader, philanthropist, and a renowned photographer from Worcester, Massachusetts.  His parents were Rose Barksy and Louis Farber.  He married twice, to Juanita Dill (died 1978) and Jessie Lie, and had two sons.  He was an executive in a business founded by his father, L. Farber Co., which supplied shoe insoles and leather shoe welting.  He and his wife became interested in early American tombstones, and he was a founding member and a president of the Association for Gravestone Studies.  Farber was noted for his photography, both of early gravestones and of nature; he exhibited his photos in numerous museums, including the Smithsonian.  Farber published some of his photos in a book entitled Reflections on a Trail Taken.  Farber was a member of the American Antiquarian Society, the Worcester Art Museum, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and other civic organizations.  He donated land to Worcester for recreation areas and supported a desert reclamation project in Niger.  He died in Worcester on May 23, 1998.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection of over 700 photographs taken by Daniel Farber, several sets of note cards decorated with photos taken by him, a set of compact discs with photos by Farber and others; and a photo album documenting the Museum of Fine Arts (Boston) exhibit "New England Begins."  About 570 of the photos are of gravestones and the rest are either nature studies or portraits.  The gravestone photos are black-and-white, while the others are color.  Most of the gravestones are located in New England, but other eastern seaboard states are also represented, including Pennsylvania, Virginia, and North and South Carolina.  Also, most of the gravestones are from the 18th century, although there are also some from the 17th and early 19th centuries.  Most of the nature photos are from New England.  The portraits are of family and friends.    Most of the photos are titled, dated, numbered, and signed by Farber on the back; a few are also signed on the front. The collection also includes some note cards printed with photographs taken by Farber.   Nature scenes decorate some cards, whiles gravestones decorate others.

In addition, the collection includes the compact disc set “Early American Gravestones: The Farber Collection,” issued by the American Antiquarian Society.  This set contains almost 15,000 images of early American gravestones from Nova Scotia to Georgia, although focusing on Connecticut and Massachusetts.  The photos were taken by Daniel and Jessie Lie Farber, Harriette Merrifield Forbes, and Dr. Ernest Caulfield.  The index to the set is found on one of the CDs.

The Museum of Fine Arts exhibit titled "New England Begins" was staged in 1982.  Farber took photos of the exhibit, which included furniture, books, portraits, household goods, and gravestones; mounted his photos in a large album, and presented it to one of the curators.  As part of the exhibit, there was a day during which craftsmen in colonial garb plied their crafts, and the album includes photos of this event as well.  (This album used to have the call number Fol. 78.)
