BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Allan I. Ludwig was a historian and photographer and instrumental in promoting the history of the carving of New England tombstones.  He was born in Yonkers, New York, in 1933, and received a PhD in art history from Yale University.  He taught at several colleges and universities and curated a number of art and photography exhibits.  He was an active member of the Association for Gravestone Studies.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

A collection of photographs of tombstones, chiefly from New England, taken by Allan I. Ludwig.  The photos are in three series, A, B, and C.

Series A (acc. 98x45) contains thirteen black-and-white photographs of details of tombstones.  Allan Ludwig used some of the images in his book, The Graven Images of Early New England.  The photographs depict human figures, some of which are very stylized; others are more life-like.  One shows a scene of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

Series B contains photographs, with customized information sheets, depicting tombstones from seventeenth to nineteenth centuries, mostly located in Massachusetts, eastern Connecticut, and Vermont.  One hundred twenty-four photos depict English gravestones.  Roughly fifty photographs were included in Ludwig's "Index of American Stonecarving," a project he initiated at the National Museum of American History.  Includes a copy of typescript of Ludwig's paper "The Graven Images of Early New England: 1653-1800."

Series C contains volumes of mounted photographs depicting gravestones. A typescript provides identifications.  (The identifications also form part of this finding aid.)  Most gravestones are located in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

ORGANIZATION

The photos came in three different groups, and these have been labeled series A, B, and C.

LANGUAGE OF MATERIALS

The materials are in English.

RESTRICTIONS ON ACCESS

Collection is open to the public.  Copyright restrictions may apply.

PROVENANCE

Series A and C were definitely transferred from DAPC; it seems they were added to what is now Series B, and that seems to be the original Col. 571.

RELATED MATERIALS

The library of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst holds additional copies of Ludwig's photographs, as part of the papers of the Association for Gravestone Studies.
