BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

The Kidder family originally resided in Massachusetts, but moved to upstate New York, particularly Genesee County, during the early 19th century.  Members of the family included John, his wife Ruth, Hosea, Alice, and Earl.  John Kidder was elected secretary of the Batavia, NY Republicans in 1810.

Several other families are represented in this collection, but their relationship to the Kidders, if any, is unknown.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection contains business, estate, and personal papers of the Kidder and other families between 1799-1864.  Items in the collection include promissory notes and receipts for the estate of John Kidder, and several recipes for dyes.  Minutes from a political meeting and a letter with political sentiments document activities of three political parties, the Democrats, Republicans, and Whigs.  There are two Civil War letters; one is about the Vicksburg Campaign.  Also included are two pieces of Confederate currency.

Although the bulk of the materials relate to the Kidder family of Genesee County, New York, other materials relate to the Rodgers family of Ohio and the Brown family of Wisconsin.  It is not known if these families had any connection to the Kidder family.  One Brown letter gives details of his new farm in Wisconsin.  The other mostly expresses religious thoughts (after the death of a family member).  Two letters were written to Mira Rodgers of Ohio by Civil War soldiers.  One wrote about his trip from Memphis to the Yazoo River in December 1862, part of a move on Vicksburg.  The other letter specifically mentioned that there was no military action for his unit at the time of the writing of his letter.
