BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Erastus Dow Palmer was a self-taught sculptor from the state of New York.  He had only six months of formal schooling before being apprenticed as a carpenter.  Palmer's talents were evident at a young age.  When he was 9 he built a working model of a  sawmill, and at 17, he left his hometown, Pompey, NY, eventually landing in Amsterdam, NY, where he worked as a carpenter, wood carver, and cabinet maker.  Later Palmer moved to Utica, where in 1843, he married as his second wife Mary Jane Seaman (his first wife had died from childbirth).  Shortly after his marriage, he made a cameo portrait of his wife, which led to his work as a cameo-cutter; Palmer produced approximately 200 of them in his first two years of work.  In 1846, he moved to Albany and began his career as a sculptor, doing reliefs, primarily for churches, and busts.  At an 1850 exhibit at the National Academy of Design, Palmer's work attracted a good deal of attention; as a result, he was made an honorary member.  Notable sitters for his numerous busts included Washington Irving, Moses Taylor, Erastus Corning, and Governor Morgan.  In 1873, Palmer went to Europe to study for a short time.  In Paris, he began the bronze statue of Chancellor Robert R. Livingston that was commissioned by the state of New York and placed in the United States Capitol in 1874.  This was his last important work, although he created a few additional pieces.  For the remainder of his life, Palmer concentrated on his family, his farm, and his investments.  He died in Albany in 1904.

Palmer had at least four children: Edward Alonzo (son by his first wife; died young), Walter Launt (Wallie; he became a landscape painter), Rebecca (perhaps the Beppie mentioned in several letters), and Madeleine (Maddie).  The letters mention the births of two daughters, one of whom was named Mary.  It is not clear if Mary is Rebecca, Madeleine, or a fifth child.  The child buried in Aurora might be Edward Alonzo, or it might be a sixth child.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection contains more than 30 letters and their transcriptions, dating 1856-1880, written by sculptor Erastus Dow Palmer, as well as several items documenting Palmer's works.  Most letters are addressed to Colonel Edwin Barker Morgan of Aurora, NY, and several others are to Major Henry Morgan.  They document Palmer's personal life, professional work, and political sentiments.  Letters indicate that Palmer subsidized his income by farming.  Palmer comments about making a model of a statue of Governor Fish; gives advice on how to hang a medallion and how to clean busts; writes about using Vermont marble, which he concludes is comparable to Italian marble; and refers to reframing medallions, creating fountain sculptures, and the crafting of a bust of Burden, which Palmer deemed his best work when he completed it in 1862.  Also included is an 1877 list of items modeled by people from Aurora, NY; it notes 18 sculptures and their dates of completion.  Among other documents is a bill to E. B. Morgan for a portrait medallion in marble and the mounting of it, costing $200.  Palmer was apparently interested in politics and offers his opinions on the subject, especially concerning the Civil War.

As well, the collection includes a number of photographs of Palmer’s works.  Fourteen photographs are from the 19th century.  Several of these photos are labeled as having been taken by Duchochois & Klauser and published by Annesley & Ferris of Albany, New York.  The vast majority of the photos were collected by J. Carson Webster for his book Erastus D. Palmer (University of Delaware Press, 1983).  Included are a few photos of Palmer himself, but most of them depict his sculptures and reliefs, and tombstones decorated with his sculptures and reliefs.  Some of the photos relate to Webster's other research projects, not to Palmer.  Also included are Webster’s note cards about Palmer’s works, including photos, dimensions, and locations.
