BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Daniel Tyson was a merchant who worked at 182 Water Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during the last half of the 18th century.  According to probate records, he died in 1795.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

This small collection contains invoices and letters addressed to merchant Daniel Tyson from 1771 to 1773.  Tyson imported goods primarily from England and resold them to merchants in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Invoices list merchandise shipped from England, while letters contain orders for specific items.  Among the items mentioned are Irish linen, pewter plates and spoons, paper, pins, rugs, blankets, dry goods, gunpowder and ammunition, snuff boxes, Leghorn hats, and Jew's harps.

. 1        "No. 8, Invoice of Sundry Merchandize Shipped by Pigou & Booth on board the Catherine, Peter Young, Master, bound to Philadelphia on Account & Risque of Mr. Daniel Tyson, Merchant," London [England], June 30, 1771. 

For Irish linen, pewter, paper, pins, rugs and blankets, fabrics, dry goods, books, combs, gunpowder, and other goods.  

Eight pages, plus endorsement on back: Invoice No. 8, from Pigou & Booth, 30th June 1771.

.2        "No. 7, Invoice of 6 packages of Merchandise ship'd on board the Charming Molly, Capt. Robt. Gill of Philadelphia, consigned Daniel Tyson, Merchant," London [England], July 9, 1771.  From D. & J. Barclay; shipment includes well-described fabrics such as printed blue & wt. [white] Dutch pin work, red ground calico, and lawn with design of blue maps.  (four pages)

.3        Letter, Pigou & Booth to Saml. Pleasants with respect to Mr. Tyson’s orders, New York, N.Y. , October 16, 1771.  Concerning terms on which they will deal with his orders.

Green Maxatawny [Berks County, Pennsylvania], to Daniel Tyson, December 25, 1771.  Includes various fabrics, handkerchiefs, knee and shoe buckles, iron tobacco boxes, men’s mitts, pewter plates and spoons, along with a note: "Please to Send Wm. Wistar’s for 1 doz. Germantown Milled Hose with most Blues…."

 

.5         Letter, Wm. Green, Maxatawny, [to Daniel Tyson] May 4, 1772.   Returning wool hats made in England (with deep crowns which will not stand a shower) and advising him that his German customers prefer those made in Reading; also makes complaint of crape, which is also returning.

.6        Letter and order for goods, Wm. Green, Maxatawny, June 15, 1772, .to Daniel Tyson, merchant, for dry goods, combs, handkerchiefs, ribbon, and Leghorn hats"; if Tyson does not have these goods on hand, please find them elsewhere and have them sent to Green.

.7        "No. 16, Invoice of 4 Packages of Merchandise ship'd on board the Pensilvania Packet, Capn. Osborne of Philadelphia, consigned Daniel Tyson, Merchant," from Daniel & John Barclay, London [England], July 1, 1772.  For sheeting, linen, calico, lawn, bandanas, etc.
