BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

William H. C. Dodd and S. Walter Dodd were engravers who worked in Newark, New Jersey, between 1860-1870.  According to an 1864 advertisement, the business, which often appeared as either William H.C. Dodd or Dodd Bros., was the successor to S. Dodd and Son.  Its rented shop was located at 306 Broad St.  Between 1874-1876, William H.C. Dodd apparently sold coal in addition to, or instead of, running his engraving business.  William and Walter were the sons of Samuel Dodd, an engraver who decorated books.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection contains an account book, a design book, and over 550 receipts relating to the business of Dodd Bros. engraving firm between 1860-1876.  The account book has two parts. The first is a daybook kept between November 1868- March 1870 by engraver William H.C. Dodd.  The second part lists monthly debits and credits in Dodd's hand for coal that he bought and sold between 1874-1876.  The back page contains an 1867 “price list for [the engraving business of] Gimbrede(?)” and Manon(?) business cards  These prices record the amounts charged for services as noted in the daybook; they were for engraving such objects as rings, silverware, dishes, thimbles, watches, lockets, door plates, name plates, carriage plates, and coffin plates.  Dodd also sold woodcuts, stencils, brands, gilding dies, die cuts, seal presses, steel business stamps, rubber stamps, and ribbons.  He engraved large amounts of business and personal stationery including visiting cards, notes, billheads, business cards, envelopes, and wedding cards.  Many entries feature illustrations of the designs and fonts used.  A tabbed index in the front of the volume records patron name, a description of the job, and the amount owed, as well as a page number reference and the date of the job.  Individual records contain the same basic information, but often include additional facts.

The design book has cloth pages with paper samples pasted in.  Samples of thousands of engraved designs and stamps are included.  Each design is numbered, and a list of prices by design number is also included.  Many of these designs are small; the average size is 1-4 cm.  Larger specimens from blocks are in a later portion of the book along with a corresponding price list.  It is probable that this book belonged to Samuel Dodd.

More than 550 receipts chiefly document business purchases made by the Dodd Bros.  Many note supplies used in the engraving business such as brass, pipes, envelopes, rubber pieces, stencil brushes, card stock, ink, casting plates, a press, an engraving lathe, stencil tools, bookbinders' tools, and numerous dies.  Other receipts indicate that the Dodd Bros. jobbed out a large amount of work, including die cuts; spool labels; notary seals, stamps, and hand presses; show cards; satin cards; electrotyping; steel dies and letter cuts; and many paper postage and society stamps.  Many of the receipts have specimens of the work including seals, canceling stamps, and paper postage or society stamps.
