BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

Hugh Gardner was a merchant during the third quarter of the 18th century at a place called Allens Fresh.  (There is a community in Charles County, Maryland called Allen’s Fresh or Allenfresh.)

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

This small collection contains orders placed with Hugh Gardner for the retail sale of goods in 1773.  Orders appear on scraps of paper.  Items mentioned include hardware; dry goods, such as silk and sheeting; buttons; stone mugs; a sealskin trunk; tea, salt, and sugar; shoes; linseed oil; and writing paper.  The two orders from 1769 are addressed to Archibald Clark.
