BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Colonel Thomas Macon resided in Hanover and Orange counties, Virginia, from 1786 to1815.  He apparently owned a large amount of land, but his occupation is unknown

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Thomas Macon assembled this collection of bills, receipts, letters, promissory notes, and other miscellaneous documents between 1786 and 1815.  Many bills and receipts mention food, clothing, saddlery, and such miscellaneous items as a grinding stone, newspaper subscriptions, looking glasses, silk, nails, and bales of cotton.  Food noted includes corn meal, flour, candy, sarsaparilla, and hyson tea.  Coats, breeches, and silk hose are the most frequently mentioned clothing.  A variety of harnesses, saddlery, and wagon repairs is also noted.  Among the more unusual items is a bill for property tax that mentions furniture owned by Macon and a bill for tax on 13 Negroes.  Also included is a bill of sale for Negroes.  Macon's signature has been removed from many of the promissory notes

ORGANIZATION

The items have been divided into bills and receipts; promissory notes; letters; and indenture.  Within each category, the items are arranged chronologically.  A name index to the collection is part of this finding aid, although not all documents seem to have been indexed.
