BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Nothing certain is known about James H. Fletcher.  He seems to have owned a general store and dealt in oats, other grains, and feathers.  Ship captains are occasionally mentioned, indicating that Fletcher did not live in Baltimore, although the bills are from merchants in that city.

It is possible that the man to whom these bills were addressed was James Henry Fletcher (1819-1896) of Accomack County, Virginia.  In the 1850 census, he was listed as a merchant; but in the 1860 and 1870 censuses as a farmer.  Nothing in the collection can confirm this.

Another James H. Fletcher was listed as a tailor and a clothier in the 1851 Baltimore city directory, but that occupation does not fit the bills in this collection.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection of bills and receipts primarily documents the purchases of James H. Fletcher between 1855-1859, some of which were probably personal, but most seem to have been for a general store.  Fletcher also dealt in grains and feathers.  Most items bought were household supplies, including brushes, buckets, brooms, nails, hinges, drugs and spices, dishes, writing paper, and furniture.  Also of interest are hairpins and combs of various sorts, including those made from whalebone and ivory and “Negro combs.”   Several lengthy bills document Fletcher's purchase of such dry goods as silk, “jaconet,” “vesting,” “overcoating,” wadding, “Negro kersey,” muslin, and “drogan,” as well as buttons, thread, buckskins, boots, Bellin gloves, cravats, handkerchiefs, and umbrellas.  One bill (acc. 75x210.2) is addressed to Mrs. J. H. Fletcher.  She purchased quantities of textbooks and reward of merit cards, presumably for a school.

Most of the bills are on printed letterhead stationery.  About a quarter of them include illustrations, chiefly of the store or factory buildings, but sometimes of the kinds of goods sold.
