BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

The Wetherill, Jones, Roberts, and inter-connected families, resided primarily in Burlington, New Jersey, and Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania (including Merion and Whitpaine Townships), between 1683-1904.  Members of the Wetherill family include John, Christopher (who came to Burlington, New Jersey, in 1682), Thomas, Joseph, Mercy, Samuel, and his niece, Elizabeth Wetherill.   Samuel Wetherill’s daughter, Mary (d.1829), married Isaac Jones of Philadelphia.  Isaac Jones (d.1807) was a merchant who also served as treasurer for the Wiccacoa Meadow Company.  The relationship of the Wetherills and Jones to the Roberts family of Whitpaine Township is unclear.

Samuel Wetherill (1736-1816) began a drug and paint business, possibly in the 1770s, with his sons as his partners.  After Samuel’s death, his son Samuel, Jr. (died 1829), and his descendants continued the business until 1933, when it was sold to the National Lead Co.  The company underwent many name changes over the years

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains records of early colonial Quaker organizations, including meeting minutes from Friends groups in Haverford, Radnor, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Burlington, New Jersey, and records of building the Merion Meeting House.  A notice from a Women’s Yearly Meeting in Burlington in 1726 cautioned Quaker women against immodest and fancy dress and taking snuff.  Also included is a letter from William Penn (London, 1708) in which he mentions his meeting with the Queen and the departure of Governor Gookin for America.

Several documents record the development of the Philadelphia Marsh by the Managers of Wiccacoa Meadow Company between 1738 and 1804.  The collection contains letters to Job Roberts from Charles Willson Peale and Rubens Peale, 1806, as well as other personal and business papers, travel journals, and printed materials relating to these various families.

The collection contains several travel journals, kept by different people.  Mary Neu[name incomplete] traveled in England in 1700 on behalf of the Society of Friends.  Owen Roberts and David Jones were among the men who visited Indian settlements in Pennsylvania in 1715.   One volume includes a sea log for a voyage from Philadelphia to St. Croix in 1770, as well as the journal of an overland trip undertaken by Isaac Jones and Hugh Howell to North Carolina in 1776-1777.  In it, Jones mentions being detained in one town while the local committee investigated them.  Yet another journal was kept by E. W. Jones and records a trip to Salem, New Jersey, in 1809.  E. W. Jones may also have kept the 1827 journal about a trip to Mount Carbon, Pennsylvania.

Also in the collection are a small group of papers relating to Samuel Wetherill, Jr. (possibly some relate to his father, Samuel, Sr.).   Included are bills for wagon and harness mending, a coffin, furniture, and other household goods.  Also included are several bills from the firms Samuel P. Wetherill & Co. and Wetherill and Brother recording the sale of paint materials and drugs.
