BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

The Willing family lived in Philadelphia during the 18th and 19th centuries.  George Willing was a merchant at the end of the 18th century.  It is unclear what his relationship was to several other individuals represented in the collection, namely Charles Willing, druggist Clement Cresson, merchant Andrew M. Jones, and John Benezet.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains bills and receipts for primarily personal and household goods and services between 1726-1850.  Included are bills for food; clothing; fire insurance; house repairs; brickwork repairs; wallpaper; glassware; such hardware as hinges, locks, and escutcheons; such dry-goods as rattnett, shalloon, buckram, and silk; block ornaments for mantles; ornamental festoons; horse harnesses; medicine and visits by the doctor.  One bill seems to have charges for parts of a military uniform.  In addition, the collection includes promissory notes; subscriptions to magazines; funeral, undertaker, and tombstone charges; records of postage fees; and tax documents.  Also found is a trade card for Gould & Co., furniture merchants of Philadelphia, which includes a rebus.  Some bills have engraved headings.
