BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Norman Wilcox Jr., was a farmer, and apparently also
a tanner, in Wayne township, Ashtabula County, Ohio. He was born in Connecticut in 1812, the son
of Rebecca Case and Norman Wilcox. The
family moved to Ashtabula County before 1820.
Norman Wilcox, Jr., first married Eunice Morse (1816-1852) and then a
woman named Susan (circa 1812-1889).
Eunice had several children, but Susan did not. Mr. Wilcox died in 1896.
Andover and Williamsfield are place names in
Ashtabula County. South Shenango is a
township is adjacent Crawford County, Pennsylvania.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
This collection contains bills and receipts
primarily addressed to Norman Wilcox, Jr.
Bills describe hardware, horse harnesses, painting, a subscription to
the Oberlin Evangelist, gravestones,
and leather goods. Many items are
receipts for cash. Some promissory notes
and checks are included, as well as a recipe for blacking and the method used
to tan hides and skins. One check bears
the engraving of a ship. Items were
originally housed in a leather receipt roll envelope, which is also in the
collection.
