BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Norman Wilcox Jr., was a farmer, and apparently also a tanner, in Wayne township, Ashtabula County, Ohio.  He was born in Connecticut in 1812, the son of Rebecca Case and Norman Wilcox.  The family moved to Ashtabula County before 1820.   Norman Wilcox, Jr., first married Eunice Morse (1816-1852) and then a woman named Susan (circa 1812-1889).  Eunice had several children, but Susan did not.   Mr. Wilcox died in 1896.

Andover and Williamsfield are place names in Ashtabula County.  South Shenango is a township is adjacent Crawford County, Pennsylvania.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains bills and receipts primarily addressed to Norman Wilcox, Jr.  Bills describe hardware, horse harnesses, painting, a subscription to the Oberlin Evangelist, gravestones, and leather goods.  Many items are receipts for cash.  Some promissory notes and checks are included, as well as a recipe for blacking and the method used to tan hides and skins.  One check bears the engraving of a ship.  Items were originally housed in a leather receipt roll envelope, which is also in the collection.
