BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

George W. Hammatt (or Hammett) lived at 24 Arrow St., Cambridge, Massachusetts, during the 1870s.  The city directories spell the surname as Hammatt, although many of the bills spell it as Hammett, and indicate that he worked in Boston, but do not give an occupation or name of business.  The 1882 Boston directory lists him as a salesman at 257 Washington Street, and he is living in Boston at that point.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

Collection of bills for household goods and services purchased by George W. Hammett between 1872-1875.  The bills are for such beddings and linens as mattresses, pillows, bolsters, damask tablecloths and napkins, doilies, and towels; such tableware as plates, bowls, a gilt dish, compote dishes, cake, tea, and coffee plates; such kitchen utensils as kettles, coffee pots, jelly molds; an "American china jug"; a washing machine; piano tuning; cleaning a French clock;  upholstering chairs and sofas; the making of blue Holland shades and lace curtains; carpets, and oil cloths.  Some bills have pictorial billheads depicting stoves, crockery, and furniture.

            Printed billhead: Linen Warehouse, importers and dealers in linens and every description of housekeeping dry goods… (Wm. W. Palmer, Beng. F. Jacobs)

 

.2         receipted bill: Mr. Hammett paid Holyoke Store, Cambridge, Jan. 4, 1873 for cleaning a French clock.

.3-.4     receipted bills, Mr.  Hammatt paid Erwin S. Carr, Old Cambridge, Feb. 27, 1873 and Dec. 18, 1873.          In Feb., Hammatt paid for furnace lining, pipes, other parts and labor.  In Dec., Hammatt paid for parts and labor on a furnace.

            Printed and illustrated billheads, both of which contain same information but use different typefaces.  Erwin S. Carr, dealer in stoves, furnaces, ranges, &c, manufacturer of tin sheet iron, copper ware, and slate, copper and tin roofing.    Illustrated with picture of a stove.

 

.5         bill, George Hammett bought from Rogers & Co., Boston, Jan. 20, 1874: B and cups, plates, butter plates, goblets, nappies, jugs, creamers, bowls, baker, wire tea pot stand, egg cups mugs, waiters, sauce tureen, potato masher, custards, napkin rings, baskets, etc.

            Printed and illustrated billhead: Rogers & Co., importers and jobbers of crockery, china & glass ware, table cutlery, silver plated ware, kerosene goods, &c.  Illustrated with view of the store.  Partners were Alvan Rogers, Chas. A. Rogers, Geo. E. Rogers.

 

.7         receipted bill, Hammett paid Worcester Bros., Cambridge, Feb. 4, 1874, for upholstering or reupholstering or  repairing upholstery on sofa, chairs, and music stool; oil carpet and oil cloth, table oil cover, etc.

.9         receipted bill, Hammett paid Worcester Bros., Cambridge, May 4, 1874, for putting down matting, making and installing shades, repairing sideboard and refrigerator, upholstering sofa and arm chair (lists materials used),  repairing frames, etc.

Hood, agent of the Metropolitan Washing Machine Company, manufacturers of Universal clothes wringer, Doty clothes washer, also Blake’s patent belt studs and solid emery wheels; novelty gas stoves, rubber tubing, etc.  All kinds of wringers repaired.  Illustrated with picture of a wringer.
