BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

David Schneider owned a mine near Emaus, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, during the last half of the 19th century.  His surname was frequently spelled Snyder.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection of bills and receipts belonged to mine owner David Schneider of Emaus, Pennsylvania.  Most items document his personal purchases and sales.  While he sold oats and wheat, he bought other items such as coal, lumber, bricks for a fireplace, porcelain, pottery, cooking utensils, glassware, roofing slates, paint, and gravestones, as well as such furniture as beds, mirrors, chairs, and washstands.  Schneider apparently made several home improvements to either his own home or the property he rented, including remodeling the kitchen and replacing gutter spouts and sinks.

He was assessed school, road, and transportation of goods taxes.  Also included is the vendue of his estate, which was held during his lifetime.
