BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

John Gaines II and Thomas Gaines were father and son chairmakers and turners in Ipswich, Massachusetts, during the first half of the 18th century. They were also the father and brother of noted Portsmouth, New Hampshire chairmaker John Gaines III. The Gaines family produced numerous types of chairs commonly found in colonial New England, but distinguished their work by the use of carved Spanish feet with a scroll at the side, the pierced form of the yoke-shaped cresting, and a particular design on the front and back stretchers.

The progenitor of this Gaines family was Henry Gaines, who emigrated from England to Lynn, Massachusetts, in 1638.  His son John I (1632-1689) became a shoemaker and moved to Ipswich, Massachusetts.  John I married Mary Treadwell (b. 1636) and they had one son John II, born in 1677.  John II became a turner and chairmaker.  He married Judith Osgood (1693-1768).  John and Judith had nine children, including John III (1704-1743) and Thomas I (1712-1761).  John III became a chairmaker, but moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire to ply his trade.

Thomas I remained with this father, became a turner and chairmaker, and eventually took over his father’s business.  He married a woman named Salome (1709-1793).  Their eldest son Thomas II (1740-1821) also became a chairmaker.  Thomas II married Elizabeth Woodbury in 1784.  Two of their children were named Elizabeth and Salome.

The Salome referred to in the papers in this collection was probably she who was the wife of Thomas I.  The Elizabeth Gaines in these papers is probably the daughter of Thomas II, although there were other family members with the same name.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains an account book, letters, poems, tax notices, and deeds relating to several generations of the Gaines family.  The account book kept by chairmakers and turners, John Gaines II and his son Thomas Gaines, provides the earliest known account of an American chairmaker.  Early on, the book was used by John, but by the mid 1730s, entries were made by Thomas as well.  Entries dating from 1707-1762 indicate that the Gaineses made great, low, banister back, slat back, crown back, carved back, and children's table chairs.  Chairs were either painted black, varnished, or sold unfinished (white).  The account book notes that a great chair in 1711 sold for nine or ten shillings, but by 1747, the price had increased to 40 shillings.  White chairs were less expensive than black ones.  They also turned table legs, bedposts, and stair banisters.

Besides making chairs, the Gaineses also repaired them, most often replacing the rush seat bottom.  As well, they repaired hand tools by making new handles and wooden parts for such items as hoes and knives.  They fixed spinning wheels, made ladies' fans, and made button molds by the dozens.  They also turned taps and "fassets," presumably for the kegs of cider they sold.  The Gaineses farmed as well, selling corn, beef, veal, sheep, thatch, and other produce, and provided such sundry labor as weighing fish, "hanging a scythe," and transporting goods and people by horse.  Written inside the back cover of the account book is part of the Gaines family genealogy.

Some letters pertain to the power of attorney and administration of estates; others are personal.  One letter details family history.   Deeds document the sale of property in Ipswich, Mass.  The poems and songs belonged to one of the Elizabeth Gaines, perhaps the same as she who drew the picture of Old North Church.  The significance of the scrap of silk with the name Joseph Sawyer is not known.
