BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

James Garland Hening lived on West Cary Street in Richmond, Virginia, at the turn of the 20th century.   He was a partner in Hening & Nuckols, an agricultural implements company.  (Howard J. Nuckols was the other partner.)   Hening was born in 1868, the son of Olivia Henderson Campbell and William Henry Hening.  He married Estelle W. Cottrell, the daughter of Maria Elizabeth and Benjamin Cottrell.  Hening died in 1953.

Sometimes the surname is spelled Henning, but that is not correct.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The items document expenses paid to various contractors for work performed at the properties of 2, 6, 11, and 12 West Cary Street in Richmond, Virginia, from 1877-1909. These properties were owned by James G. Hening.  Renovations made at these properties included interior and exterior painting, tinning and slating roofs, plumbing, furnace repairs, brickwork, wallpapering, the replacement of moldings and ceilings, erecting walls, and structural repairs of porches and stairs.  The 1877 letter about roofing slate is not addressed to Hening and cannot pertain to him as he was only nine years old when it was written.  Invoices represent good examples of period billheads, although only a few are illustrated.
