BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Julius O. Jacot was a watchmaker and jeweler in Stockbridge, Massachusetts.  He was born in Neuchatel canton, Switzerland, in 1841.  His naturalization papers were a little fuzzy, but it seems he arrived in the United States in 1867.  He married twice and had several children, including son Charles M. Jacot, who was also a jeweler, watch seller, and optician in Stockbridge.  Julius Jacot was a member of the Wisdom Masonic lodge in Stockbridge, and according to its records, he died in September 1910.  According to a 1903 ship’s passenger list, at that time Julius Jacot was a resident of Quebec, Canada, although he was a U.S. citizen.  Little else was learned about him.

Emile Jacot was a jeweler and clock and watch maker in Quebec, Quebec, Canada.  He was born in Switzerland around 1840.  His wife was named Louise.  Although little else was learned about him, it is strongly believed that he was a brother of Julius O. Jacot.

Charles Maury Jacot was born in 1875 and followed in his father’s footsteps, although he seems to have run his own business.  He married Edna May Spring in 1901 in Oxford County, Maine.  He was a member of the Occidental Masonic lodge in Stockbridge, and according to its records, he died in June 1941.

One of Julius Jacot’s son, Louis Ophir (1874-1966) worked in a hotel in Boston run by his uncle Paul H. Jacot, another brother of Julius Jacot.   Another son, Frederick (1881-1957), was an accountant in New York City.  Daughter Louise M. E. Jacot (born circa 1879) married Joseph C. C. Gagnon in 1912.

Naturalization papers were found for a Paul Henri Jacot, a cook, who was born in Switzerland in 1844.  He arrived in the United States in 1860 and was petitioning for citizenship in 1882.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Consists of six business account books kept from 1869 to 1891, along with over 420 letters, invoices, bills, and circulars dating from 1893 to 1902.  The volumes document the repair of a wide range of watches and jewelry as well as the sale of men's and women's watches, chains, spectacles, silverware, rings, gemstones, earrings, bracelets, and strings for instruments.  Loose items show what Jacot purchased from other businesses to supply his store, including optical items from Joseph Frielander & Bros.; bracelets, earrings, class pins and other pieces of women's jewelry from the Charles M. Robbins Co.; and watches, watch parts, and jewelry from Cross & Beguelin, wholesale agents for watches.  Such items as rattles, spoons, ladles, music boxes, musical instruments, cameras, and medals are also mentioned.  Accession 95x14.3 also includes charges for filling teeth.
