BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

Thomas Davis Grover lived in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.  He was born in 1840, the son of Eliza Miles and Thomas Jefferson Grover.  He married Mary Pennypacker in 1864.  They had a daughter and two sons.  In the 1870 and 1880 censuses, his profession was listed as carpenter, but it is possible that he owned a well-established general contracting business and employed several men to do carpentry and masonry work.  The business may have also included painting and repairing carriages.  In the 1900 census, he was listed as a fire insurance agent.  He was apparently well educated and financially secure, holding stock and being a member of the Men's Literary Union among other clubs.  Grover died in Phoenixville in 1907.

Mary Pennypacker Grover was the daughter of Elizabeth Buckwalter and Matthias Showalter Pennypacker.  She was born in 1840 and died in 1903.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection contains over 600 items pertaining to Thomas D. Grover, consisting primarily of printed and manuscript receipts for cash transactions and some invoices.  A number of items have printed billheads.  Grover purchased stationery supplies; dishes and glasses; paint and varnishing supplies; hardware; various linens and textiles; lumber; iron; and large quantities of carriage parts such as wagon wheel spokes, wheel rims, springs, axle clips, and shaft couplings.  Tax bills, receipts for payment of taxes and for payment of fire insurance premiums, payments of funeral dues to various mutual relief associations, a couple of magazine subscriptions, and other documents are also found in the collection.  Some items are in the name of Thomas Grover’s brother Robert Agnew Grover, in the name of his wife, or in the name of his father-in-law Matthias S. Pennypacker.
