SCOPE AND CONTENT

This artificial and still growing collection contains over 1000 business and personal letters dating from 1642 to 1986.  The collection is particularly strong in material relating to 19th century American artists and sculptors.  The social letters offer an interesting view of 19th century domestic life, and often refer to current events, religion, health, and family issues.  Many of the business letters mention craftsmen's work and orders for supplies as well as for finished products.  As well, the collection includes some blank letter sheets, some with business letter heads and some with patriotic themes dating from the Civil War.

Note that brief letters on company letterheads are generally with the Printed Bills Collection (Col. 71), unless the content of the letter is significant.

ORGANIZATION

The letters are filed under the surname of the writer of the letter.
