BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
It is not known who compiled this group of
documents. There is, however, some evidence that at least
some of the bills were referred to a collection agency or were referenced in
legal cases.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
This collection consists of over two thousand bills
principally representing business firms in New York City and Brooklyn. Most of these businesses performed renovation
work on city buildings, the overwhelming number of which were dwellings, both
homes and apartments. Work included
carpentry, paper hanging, painting, roofing, wiring and lighting installation,
decorating, plumbing, installing glass, repairing ironwork and elevators, etc. Charges for services such as sprinkling
streets with water and removal of wastes are also found. Often the address where the work was done is
indicated on the bill. A number of the bills
were made out to decedents’ estates. Some
of the estates represented are those of Mary A. Chisolm (1827-1913, widow of
William Edings Chisolm; surname also misspelled as Chisholm), Frederick P.
James (his widow Julia L. Butterfield was a trustee for his estate), and
William C. Rhinelander. J. Edgar
Leaycraft & Co., an insurance and real estate business, appears often as a
customer.
Some bills are for goods, such as produce,
stationery, and suits for elevator men, not at all related to renovations of
buildings. Bills to the Hoffman House, a
noted hotel, include one from a rat catcher and vermin exterminator, as well as
bills for hotel supplies and liquor. L.M.
Bates and Company, a fancy dry goods store in New York City, purchased a
variety of goods for its business. Several
bills from English businesses to Mr. George P. Bliss are also found; several ar
for bicycles, and one is for instruction in riding a bicycle.
ORGANIZATION
The bills are arranged alphabetically by name of
company; if the company name is a personal name, then the bill is filed under
the surname (so William Allen & Company is filed under Allen, not William).
LANGUAGE OF
MATERIALS
The materials are in English.
