BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Jonathan Evans (1843-1911) was a brass manufacturer
(according to 1880 census) and merchant (according to his death certificate) in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In the 1876
city directory, he was listed as working at Cooper, Jones & Cadbury. He was born in Germantown in 1843, the son of
Catherine Wistar (1802-1870) and Thomas Evans (1798-1868). In 1873, Jonathan married Rachel Reeve Cope
(1850-1939), the daughter of Anna Stewardson Brown and Francis Reeve Cope. Jonathan and Rachel had several children:
Anna Cope (1875-1967), Francis Algernon (1878-1949), Edward Wyatt (1881-1976),
Ernest Mervyn (1884-1911), and Harold (1886-1977). Members of the Evans family were Quakers. At the time of his death in 1911, Jonathan
and Rachel Evans lived at the corner of Haines and Chew Streets.
Jonathan’s siblings were John Wistar (1836-1873),
Thomas Wistar (1837-1857), Hannah Bacon (1839-1939), and Katherine Wistar
(1841-1904) Evans. Nothing in the papers
indicates that Jonathan’s middle name was Wistar, although some family trees
give him that name.
The Evans family seemed to have spent several summers
in Newport, Rhode Island, and at least one in Magnolia, Massachusetts.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Contains bills and receipts, primarily for work done
on houses owned by Evans; tax and water bills; check stubs; and bankbooks. The bills relate to three houses, one on
Coulter Street and the others at 226 & 228 Stampers Street (also called
Alley) in Philadelphia. Such work as
interior repairs, wood work, glazing, washing ceilings and walls, hanging wall
paper, painting roofs and chimneys, laying a basement, soldering tin, covering
a shed and privy with a tin roof, walling up a fire place, installing a new
boiler, plumbing work, hanging drapes, and paving are mentioned. Costs of lumber, nails, sandpaper, paint,
wallpaper, bricks, sand, and cement are documented.
A volume of accounts kept by Evans as a trustee to
John Wistar in 1879 is part of the material, along with check stubs and passbooks
dating from 1874 to 1892. All of the
accounts were with Provident Life & Trust Co. Highlights of the check stubs include
payments for tuition, swimming and drawing lessons, renting a house for the summer,
some clothing, blankets, a chestnut case, wages, charitable contributions,
lawyers’ and doctors’ fees, and other personal expenses.
