BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
John Doggett was a cabinetmaker, carver, and gilder
in Roxbury and
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Consists of a daybook kept from 1802 to 1809; a letterbook
used from 1825 to 1829; bills, primarily on printed billheads; and an auction
catalog (photocopy only). Three of the
bills are photocopies of originals. The daybook documents the daily activities
and business associates of John Doggett.
Such objects as picture frames and glazes, chairs, composition board,
embroidery frames, glass frames with gilt, woodwork and carving for clock
cases, and gilded cases were made and sold by Doggett and his associates. They also gilded and painted looking glass
and picture frames, cabinet doors, pedestals for clocks, bedsteads, and other
items made by cabinetmakers in other shops.
In exchange, Doggett received such items as wood screws, sand paper,
nails, gold-leaf sheets, whiting and dry-goods.
The interrelationships between Roxbury area craftsmen are also recorded
in the volume. For example, John Evans
made wooden balls and other clock ornaments for Doggett. In turn, Doggett made gilded clock cases for
Simon and Aaron Willard.
The letterbook documents Doggett's import
business. Most of the letters, entered
in several different hands, pertain to shipments, orders, and accounts
current. A few contain complaints about
the quality of merchandise or notes about what was selling well. Carpets, rugs, plate glass, and silvered
looking glass are among the items bought.
The bills in the collection relate to the sale of looking glasses,
frames, molding, carpeting, and painted floor cloths. In addition, the collection includes a
photocopy of a catalog of John Doggett, Jr.’s books, autographs, and paintings
which were auctioned in 1852.
