BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

J. William Shaw was an architect.  His name appears sporadically in Philadelphia city directories from 1883 to 1914 as an architect or draftsman.  After 1899, he was employed by the Pennsylvania Railroad at the Broad Street Station.  Shaw maintained a home and office in Wayne, Pennsylvania, where much of his work was done.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection consists of pencil, pen and ink, and water color architectural drawings by Shaw; five photographs of unidentified houses; and blueprints and other plans related to Shaw's work for the Pennsylvania Railroad, primarily in Delaware County, Pa.  The majority of the drawings are perspective renderings, although a few floor plans and elevations are included.  Designs are for residences in Wayne, Pa., commercial buildings, a storehouse, an engine house, and several churches.  A range of revival styles is represented, including Gothic, Renaissance, Romanesque, Queen Anne, and Tudor.  Several feature mixtures of medieval and classical forms.  Much of the paper used bears the watermark of J. Whatman.  Also included are specifications and complete architectural plans for the residence of Horace F. Smith of Germantown, Pa.

Plans pertaining to the Pennsylvania railroad are for such things as locomotive shops, engine houses, stations, a wedge system and railroad supports, truss bridges, and timber trestles.  Also included are plot plans for Wayne and St. Davids, Pennsylvania.

ORGANIZATION

For the most part, the drawings are in accession number order.  Number 70x81.33cc is oversized.
