BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
Edmond Ballora was an interior decorator, listing himself as providing Decoration Artistique, at 516 and 681 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. Little information was learned about his career, however. He was born as Adib Ballora on March 17, 1888, in Jerusalem, which was part of the Ottoman Empire at that time. The family often described itself as Syrian; brothers Adib and Edward renounced loyalty to the Ottoman Sultan on their naturalization papers (Adib in 1913, brother Edward during World War I).
Adib/Edmond and a sister Anice(?)arrived in the United States with their mother Sarah on September 16, 1906. Sadly, brother and sister were rejected at this time, but they were later able to rejoin their mother. The 1910 census listed father Abdullah Ballora as head, and he was a professor of Arabic. However, the 1915 state census listed Sarah Ballora as head of the household, and nothing else was learned about Abdullah. There were several daughters in the family as well; in 1910 one was listed as a servant, one was a stenographer, and another was a milliner.
Adib became a salesman and a buyer for an unknown firm. He applied for a U.S. passport in 1911, listing his occupation as buyer, and declaring that he was going on a buying trip to England, France, and Italy. On his 1917 draft registration card, he declared he was a salesman at L. Alavoine & Co., a high-end firm of art dealers and decorators which catered to the wealthy.
Adib changed his name to Edmond between 1917 (he was Adib on his draft registration card) and 1920 (he was Edmond in the U.S. census). It is not known whether he ever married. He died in 1965 and was buried at the Evergreens Cemetery in Brooklyn.
SCOPE
AND CONTENT
The collection consists of 125 drawings
and tracings, primarily in pencil and colored pencil, for room interiors and
furniture. Many of the designs suggest a
French influence. A variety of styles is
featured, including moderne, neo-classical, art deco, Renaissance revival, and
Louis XV. Dining rooms with furnishings,
ceiling lights, details of carving, schemes for Mrs. Nichol's salon, a game
room, a foyer, and plans for window treatment are among the depictions. Several of the renditions are full scale. In
many instances, the client is identified.
Mrs.
W.P. Chrysler and Mrs. P.H. Ruxton were among his clients.
ORGANIZATION
The drawings are arranged in accession
number order and are filed in Map Case 2, Drawers 6 and 7.
PROVENANCE
Gift of Charles B. Wood.
RELATED
MATERIALS
See also Col. 188,
Emery Roth drawings, at this repository.
Identical drawings, both unsigned, of the same table appear in both
collections, and it is suspected that there was either a professional
relationship between Ballora and Roth, or that the drawings in the collections
were mixed up before being donated to the Downs Collection.

known connection between the men. Both
collections came from the same source and the drawings were mixed up prior to
