BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

William Henry Elliot (1829-1878) was from New York City.  He was the son of George Thompson Elliot (1793-1869, a merchant) and Rebecca Giraud Foster (born circa 1800).  William’s siblings included George T. Elliot, Jr., who became a physician, and Daniel Giraud Foster, who was a noted naturalist.   (There was also another brother named Andrew, who was a merchant.)

William married twice, the first time in November 1855 to Blanche P. Molinard (circa 1832-1865), the daughter of Julien (circa 1797-circa 1860) and Laura (born circa 1805) Molinard.  Both parents were born in France.  Father Julien taught French, for awhile at the United States Military Academy (West Point, in the early 1830s, and then later at the Albany Female Academy.  Blanche was the assistant piano forte teacher at this academy in 1851.  William and Blanche had three children: Julien Molinard, Rebecca Giraud, and Richard McCall Elliot.

Sometime after Blanche Molinard Elliot died in 1865, William married Eliza H. (no maiden name found), who was born in Philadelphia on June 10, 1844.  William died in 1878, and Eliza moved back to Philadelphia, along with Richard and Rebecca.  In 1920, Eliza and Rebecca lived together in Pomfret, Connecticut.

Julien Molinard (Jule) seems to have been the eldest child, but his birth date is not known.  He attended Columbia Grammar School in 1867, and graduated from Hamilton College in 1876.  In 1883, he was secretary and treasurer of Firmenich Sugar Refining Co., Buffalo, N.Y. In 1891, he was a broker in NYC.

Rebecca Giraud (Becky), according to a passport application, was born Nov. 14, 1857 in Louisiana (although in the 1880 census, her age was given as 20, and in the 1860 census as 10, clearly a mistake).  It is not known what she did between 1880, when she was in Philadelphia, and 1920, when she was living in Pomfret, Conn., with her step-mother.

Richard McCall (Dick) was born on March 25, 1861, in New York City.  He stayed in Philadelphia, married Elizabeth Farnum Wheeler, was a banker, and died on March 29, 1925, at “Pembroke,” home of Charles Wheeler in Bryn Mawr.

Other people are mentioned in some of the bills, receipts, and accounts.  Trustee of the estate, and called uncle by the children, was Gamaliel Gates Smith (1814-1886) of New York City, an iron merchant.  He was married to Margaret Ten Eyck Foster, who was perhaps the sister or aunt of Jacob Post Giraud Foster; she was probably related to William H. Elliot’s mother.  It is not known if Gamaliel Smith was really an uncle of the Elliot children, or if he was just called that in recognition of his special status to the family.

Some of the accounts were submitted by Sallie Duncan Elliot of Morristown, New Jersey; the children may have lived with her.  She was the widow of Dr. George T. Elliot, Jr. (William H. Elliot’s brother who died in 1871, thus making her an aunt-by-marriage to the children).  On Nov. 4, 1875, Sallie Elliot married Jacob Post Giraud [J.P. Giraud] Foster, an attorney who appears in the papers.  He was 48 years old at the time of his marriage, and was the son of Andrew and Anna Ten Eyck Foster; he was probably a relative of Rebecca Giraud Foster Elliot, the mother of the children.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Consists of approximately 125 bills and receipts, many on printed billheads, relating to expenses accrued by William Elliot's three children, Julien, Rebecca, and Richard, from 1870 to 1875.  Several vouchers document money received by Elliot from Gamaliel G. Smith for the support of his children.  Letters to Smith from Julien pertain to the payment of his bills.  Items purchased included a variety of clothing from stores in New York City, school supplies, and related school expenses.  Many of the bills were for tuition, room, and board for each of the children.  Rebecca attended the schools of the Misses Wagner in Fishkill, N.Y., and the Moravian Seminary in Bethlehem, Pa., while her brothers went to a school in Cornwall, N.Y.  There are also two dentists' bills.
