SCOPE AND CONTENT
This
artificial and still open collection consists of printed cards given by school
teachers to students for excellence in studies, good behavior, and
attendance. The earliest examples are
small postage size woodcuts, often with a Bible verse. By 1850, the cards became larger and more ornate
with color added to the designs of fruit, flowers, and studious children. Most carried a moral or message such as
"Diligence is the best guarantee of success." By the 1870s, mass produced color lithographs
were most frequently used as rewards of merit.
The larger brightly colored cards often showed children at play or ornate
floral designs. The moral or religious
message all but disappeared from these late cards. The use of reward of merit cards declined
after 1900.
