BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

John Allgaier was a carriage manufacturer at the corner of Fifth and Buttonwood Sts. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.  According to his trade card, he built "all the latest styles of” a wide assortment of different kinds of carriages.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection consists of 38 hand-colored drawings of carriage models on stiff board; pencil sketches of the carriages on tracing paper; over 50 photographic reproductions of the sketches mounted for promotional use; 19 photos of actual carriages; an ad from Adolphus Muller that shows specimens of lithographic prints and photoplate engravings for use in catalogs, circulars, pamphlets, leaflets, and cards; circulars from other firms; advertising materials from glass suppliers; and Allgaier's trade card featuring an illustration of Agricultural Hall at the Centennial Exposition.  In some cases drawings of carriage models, albumen prints, and sketches correspond.  Styles represented include landau, landaulets, Clarences, caliches, coaches, couplets, coupes, hearses, rockaways, barouches or britts, Victorias or cabriolets, wagonettes, dog carts, phaetons, etc.  Some of the designs are numbered, suggesting some uniformity among carriage makers.
