BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

 

William Gallimore (1807?-1891) was a designer and engraver.  He did considerable work for the Wedgwoods, Enoch Wood, John Alcock, John Ridgeway, and other English potters.  He died in 1891 in Trenton, New .Jersey  at the home of his son, William W. Gallimore, who was also in the pottery business, as were his children.

 

 

SCOPE AND CONTENT

 

The collection consists mainly of transfer prints and proofs from cooper plates engraved by Gallimore and others, together with some original drawings from which the engravings were made, for potteries in Staffordshire, England.  Pastoral scenes, exotic landscapes, elaborate architecture, genre scenes, floral and geometric designs, and miscellaneous scenes are represented.  Also included is a letter from the Johnson Brothers to Edwin A. Barber and  a piece of cardboard marked "Old Proof Prints/Property of E.A.B./ Given by Mr. Gallimore [William W.] in 1892/ 50 prints (1820-1830) / Also from other sources 19 Prints 1830-1840."

.22       Border fragment and three designs on a single sheet.  Border has stylized vine and flowers surrounding cartouches with alternating roses and country cottages.  (Very similar to .20.)  Print marked "TYROL J & G ALCOCK."

 

 

EXOTIC SCENES AND ELABORATE ARCHITECTURE

 

.24       Border surrounds an exotic landscape.  Border has a basketweave pattern surrounded by a vine.  Stylized motif on inner perimeter.  Landscape depicts three figures in elaborate boat on river spanned by a bridge.  Buildings with pagoda-like architectural elements in background with trees.  Cartouche at lower right with roses, shamrocks, and thistles says "Stone ware ALADDIN JOHN RIDGWAY."  Motif with "Rd" within a diamond with Roman numerals below.  20.2 cm diam.  Not on transfer paper.

 

.25       Same as .24 but larger; 28.2 cm diam.

 

.26       Border surrounds an exotic landscape.  Border has stylized vine and floral motifs with stylized motif on inner perimeter.  Landscape depicts three figures near building with Indian or Near Eastern architectural elements.  Cartouche at lower right with roses, shamrocks, and thistles says "Stone ware SCIO JOHN RIDGWAY."  23.2 cm diam.  Not on transfer paper.

.28       Border surrounds landscape with large, elaborate building.  Border has a lattice pattern with five cartouches each surrounding same building.  Landscape depicts three figures by wall surrounding building.  Other figures on enclosed lawn.  Building has towers and large central tower with weather vane.  Cartouche at lower right with thistles, flowers, and crown says "UNIVERSITY J R B & Co."  18.2 cm. diam.  Not on transfer paper.

.30       Border surrounds what is apparently a Scottish scene.  Border has plaid design with a chain of thistles on inner perimeter.  Landscape depicts man in kilt talking to two females.  Two dogs accompany the figures.  Trees, castle and mountains in background.  Cartouche at lower right has roses, shamrocks, and thistles surrounded by lion, unicorn, and crown.  Cartouche says "BREDALBANE."  24.2 c diam.  Not on transfer paper.

 

.31       Border surrounds exotic landscape.  Border has stylized basketweave pattern overprinted with flowers.  Swags of roses surround inner perimeter.  Landscape depicts figures grouped in boats in foreground.  Background with elaborate buildings, one with onion-shaped dome.  Cartouche at lower right says "J R & Co ARCHIPELAGO."  28.2 cm diam.  Not on transfer paper.

 

.32       Border surrounds exotic landscape.  Border has stylized basketweave pattern with four asymmetrical cartouches surrounding buildings.  Landscape has buildings with classical columns and palm trees.  Cartouche at lower right says "PALESTINE J. Ridgway .& Co." and other illegible words.  23.4 cm diam.  Not on transfer paper.

 

.33       Border surrounds landscape with large, elaborate building.  Border has concentric lines overprinted with vines and flowers.  Landscape depicts group of figures in boat on river in moonlight.  Building (or town wall?) has many square towers.  Two cartouches appear at lower right.  One with shield and crown says "B-W.M & Co. RHINE."  Other cartouche has lion, unicorn and shield and says "DIEUT DROIT HONI SOITQUIMALY PEN."  28.2 cm diam.  Not on transfer paper.

 

.34       Border surrounds exotic landscape with exotic architecture.  Border has lattice pattern overprinted with six cartouches surrounding alternating flowers and river scenes.  Landscape has two figures on a riverbank.  Building with elaborate roof with many turrets on opposite shore.  Cartouche at cut section in border says "MOSELLE J & G ALCOCK COBRIDGE."  Approx.  27 cm diam.

.43       Narrow, stylized border surrounds exotic foliage flanking scene in which man rides a zebra with a second zebra running along side.  Running lion appears in background.  Approx. 17 cm diam. 

 

.44       Stylized octagon border surrounds oriental landscape.  Two figures in foreground.  Numerous buildings with pagoda roofs.  Cartouche at upper left says "Shanchai [or possibly Shanghai] W Adams."  Octagonal in shape.  Approx. 39.7 x 28.4 cm.

 

.45       Oval design depicts walled courtyard garden with fountain.  Six figures seated or standing in foreground take refreshment.  Their attire (including a curved sword) and objects in use (including a water pipe) give the scene a Middle Eastern flavor.  Through an arched entryway with elaborate architecture, distant mountains are visible.  Corinthian columns line the courtyard.  Approx.20 x 13 cm.

 

.46       Oval design depicts three horsemen and two travellers on foot accompanied by a dog approaching a collection of elaborate buildings surrounding a central monument with a Corinthian column atop a square plinth.  Two small buildings with arched doorways at lower right.  In left middle ground, three figures stand at entrance to large building.  Large building with tower appears in background at right.  Approx. 26 x 23 cm.

 

.47       Oval design depicts three figures watching a horseman lead a rider less horse.   In left middle ground, three figures chat beneath trees.  Castle appears in center middleground.  Trees in foreground and background give landscape a forest setting.  Print mounted on paper and identified as "Residence of Solimenes near Vesuvius."  Legend is repeated on mounting paper which is also marked "Ill. 1.  Enoch Wood 3 1/2 wide margin with vertical tower."  Approx. 33 x 20.5 cm.

.61       Border with cartouches enclosing urns and flowers surrounds a scene with urn, foliage, and two figures.  Apparently circular (though  only a fragment).  Urn symbol at upper right rests on a plinth marked "CANOVA Stoneware."  Fragment.  Not on transfer paper.

 

.62       Basketweave border with cartouches enclosing urns surrounds elaborate vase, covered urn, and dish on pedestal with grapes and flowers.  Circular.  19.5 cm diam.  Cartouche at lower right has roses, shamrocks, and thistles and reads "BERLIN VASE J. Ridgeway No. 7153 Registered."
