HISTORICAL STATEMENT

Moravian communities in Pennsylvania began to be settled in 1735.  The Moravians, disciples of John Hus (1369-1415), belonged to the Church of Unitas Fratrum, or Fratres Bohemiae, or Unity of the Brethren, or the Church of the Moravians.  At the beginning of the 18th century, the people who would form these Pennsylvania communities, residents of Bohemia and Moravia (an Austrian Margravate until 1914), were expelled from their homeland.  They found refuge and asylum on the estate of Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf, now acknowledged to be the "founder," patron, and bishop of the reorganized Moravian Church.  The refugees built a small village, called Herrnhut, between 1722 and 1727 on Zinzendorf's estate.  It became the principal seat of the Moravian or Bohemian Brotherhood whose members were well known as the "Herrnhuter." Although these Brethren came from Moravia, they spoke German.

The first Moravian venture in foreign lands started in 1731.  Missionary colonies were founded in the West Indies, Greenland, among the North American Indians, and in the state of Georgia.  From the beginning, the sole object of the Moravians was to provide Indians and European settlers with Gospel privileges and not to interfere with any established church.  The Moravians were pacifists and as a consequence, their colony in Georgia, established in 1735, was a failure because they refused to bear arms against the Spaniards.  Forced to leave Georgia, they focused their attention on Pennsylvania where they arrived in 1740.

In 1742, the ship Catherine arrived in Philadelphia with fifty-seven pilgrims; various Moravian settlements ensued: Bethlehem in 1742, Philadelphia in 1743, Nazareth in 1744, York in 1744, Lititz in 1745, Emaus in 1747, Lebanon in 1747, and Lancaster in 1749.

In 1740, the noted evangelist George Whitefield purchased a 5,000 acre tract in the "Fork of the Delaware," intending to build a school for African-Americans.  The following year the Moravians bought the property.  They built Nazareth Hall, expecting it to be the home of Count von Zinzendorf, who had come to America in 1741.  The cornerstone for what would be referred to as the Manor House was laid on May 2, 1755 and the structure was completed and dedicated on November 12, 1756.  However, because business matters prevented Zinzendorf from moving to America, he never resided there and another use for the building was sought.

The Moravian zeal for educating their children went back to John Amos Comenius, the father of education in 17th century Moravia and the last bishop of the Moravian Church in Germany, who based his principles of learning on visual techniques and means.

On June 6, 1759, 111 boys and their nineteen tutors and attendants left the Moravian settlement in Bethlehem for Nazareth where they were greeted by the sound of trumpets and welcomed to their new home.  The school, Nazareth Hall, had been founded. At first the school trained only the sons of Moravian clergy, but that policy changed in 1762.  Even after enrollment was open and education no longer free, Nazareth Hall encountered financial difficulty.

The American Revolution brought hard times to Nazareth Hall.  The number of pupils gradually diminished to eleven and the school closed temporarily in 1779.  When the doors reopened on October 3, 1785, instruction was reorganized under the guidance of Rev. Charles G. Reichel, who served as principal for seventeen years.  By 1789, 45 boys between the ages of 7 and 12 were receiving instruction in reading, writing, arithmetic, English, German, Latin, French, Greek, history, geography, mathematics, music, and drawing.  One of the school's intentions was to prepare the students for a career in commerce.  The boys took public exams at the end of the school year.  Until 1802, German was spoken on three days and English on three days.  On Sundays both languages were spoken.  A nineteenth century advertisement for the school read:

"Nazareth Hall, Moravian School, For young Gentlemen in Nazareth, Northampton Co., PA, Established, October, 1785.

Pleasantly located ... the village of Nazareth has telegraphic and daily travelling and express communications with New York City, New Jersey Central R.R., from Easton, seven miles from Nazareth, and with Philadelphia by North Pennsylvania R.R. ... Number of pupils limited to 100, age of admission from nine to fourteen. Extra studies: in Greek, Latin, and French, drawing and painting, piano forte, violin, organ, flute, guitar. Use of Library, 50 cents, containing upwards of 4000 volumes, class books, maps, etc.

            Rev. Edward H. Reichel, Principal".

Much attention was paid to exercises in geometrical and architectural drawing.  Some illustrations in "Drawing by students of Nazareth School" were copied from Johann D. Preissler, De Durch Theorie erfundene Practice, (Winterthur call no.: NC 705 P62*), showing the young students' various talents.

A Theological Seminary was authorized and on October 3, 1807, it opened with three scholars (Wm. H. Van Vleck, Samuel Reicke, and Peter Wolle), all of whom later became bishops of the church.  In 1862, the Rev. Edward H. Reichel organized his pupils into a uniformed cadet company and introduced military drill as part of the routine of physical culture. Shortly thereafter, Nazareth Hall gained a reputation as a military academy.  It maintained that orientation until 1929, when it closed its doors forever.

Further information on Nazareth Hall is contained in Nazareth Hall: An Historical Sketch and Roster of Principals, Teachers and Pupils, by H. H. Hacker, a one time instructor at the school.  The book was published in 1910 by the Times Publishing Co. of Bethlehem, Pa. (Winterthur call number LD7501 N33.)  References that are made to student listings in the following descriptions come from this volume.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection consists primarily of drawings, ranging from rough pencil sketches to finished paintings, done by students studying drawing at Nazareth Hall between 1793 and 1828.  Most of the drawings are signed and dated.  A variety of subjects are represented in a series of 173 works of students, possibly in Andrew Benade's classes, and a scrapbook of student illustrations compiled by an unidentified teacher of the school.  Many of the drawings are of the same subjects, either exercises from drawing manuals or copies of prints.  Also featured are a group of fifteen architectural drawings done in pen-and-ink, many of which are finished in color.

The collection also includes an examination book from the Autumnal Examination in 1793.  It contains specimens of writing in English and German; dialogues spoken by the different classes on astronomy, history, and other subjects; other recitations by students, in English, German, French and Latin; drawings; and geometry exercises.

ORGANIZATION

The drawings are in four boxes, with two oversized drawings in a map case.  Materials which are part of accession 61x94 are in Boxes 1-3.  The architectural drawings of acc. 60x10 are in Box 4.  The scrapbook with the label “Drawings by Students of Nazareth Hall” (acc. 71x211) holds more drawings, including some architectural studies.  This scrapbook also available on microfilm, reel 2826.  A manuscript volume from the Autumnal Examination of 1793 (acc. 78x266) contains writings, dialogues, some drawings, and other exercises that were part of those examinations.

Name indexes to the students whose works are in the collection are appended to this finding aid; each index covers a separate accession number.  The same student may be listed in more than one index.
