Col. 209 – Byrdcliffe (Art colony)

Series VII:  Photographs

Photographs are mostly family pictures, including some of Jane and Ralph Whitehead as children and young adults.  In addition, there are photographs taken at Byrdcliffe in 1908 by Jesse Tarbox Beals, a couple of photos taken by Eva Watson Schutze,  photographs of the Whiteheads’ various homes, and modern prints developed from glass plate negatives.  The same image may be found in more than one location because, for example, one copy is in a photo album, and another copy is loose, or because different copies of the same image are separated due to size.  Post cards are from various family trips and from Ralph, Jr.’s World War I service in England and France.  One album contains photos taken by Ralph, Jr., while he was working in South America.

.1140.55          Jane Whitehead seated in parlor or studio, early 1890s(?).  There is a fur (probably a bearskin) rug on the floor, a tiger skin draped over the sofa, a bird cage on a table, pictures on the wall, a picture on an easel, and several tables and chairs.  The table supporting the bird cage is decorated with a fleur-de-lis, the stylized lily that the Whiteheads considered to be their symbol.  The painting on the easel in this photo reappears in one of the rooms at Arcady, probably Ralph Whitehead’s library, see .324.

The painting commemorates their “spiritual contract,” that is, their pledge to devote themselves to the arts and crafts ideal, which they agreed to one afternoon in 1891 while they were in Italy.  The picture, a wooden plaque, depicts a landscape with rolling hills and pine trees, with a pair of wings descending through a sunburst.  A Latin inscription surrounds the image.  The plaque was later incorporated into a piece of furniture (see .281).

.1140.56a-b     Jane Whitehead, in dark net dress holding fan, 1890s(?). “Flli Alinari/Firenze-8 Via Nazionale/L.G. Milano [Italy]” printed on back.  See also .57 in same dress.  (Ralph Whitehead also had a photograph taken by the same photographer -see  .77-.78, in Box 1, folder 5.)

Box 3, Folder 2: Exteriors of Arcady, the Whitehead's residence in California, ca. 1892- early 1900s.

Note:  For other views of Arcady, see Box 11.

Note:  As one drove up to Arcady, one’s first view of the house was of the long porch with columns, which the Whiteheads called the “stoa.”  This was considered the front of the house.  However, the drive swung around to the other side of the house, and here was located the main entrance.  Therefore what most people would consider to be “the front door” was actually on the back side of the house.  In order to avoid confusion, an effort has been made to differentiate between the two sides by calling one the stoa side or facade (which is the front of the house) and the other the entrance side or façade (which is the back of the house).

.1140.110        Three unidentified women and small child outside the Sloyd School at Arcady, ca. 1900.  The woman on the right might be Jane Whitehead, and the child might be Ralph, Jr.  One of the women is seated on the steps and holds what may be a sketchpad.  The women may be artists who resided at Arcady.

.1140.284        A view of the valley in California where Arcady was being built.  There is a tent to the right and piles of logs in the background at left.  On the back is written, “Repeat this evening or morning.”  n.d., but probably mid-1890s.  See also .285-.286.

.1140.285        A view of the valley where Arcady was being built.  Part of Arcady is visible to the left and appears to be in the process of being constructed.  Piles of tiles are on the roof of the low part of the area visible.  The tent in the previous picture is to the right.  Probably mid-1890s.  See also .284 & .286.

.1140.286        An exterior of Arcady as it was being built.  Piles of tiles are visible on one of the lower roofs and a ladder leading to a higher roof.  An unidentified young girl sits in the flowers in the foreground.  The top of a worker's head is visible on the porch behind the bushes.  Probably mid-1890s.  See also .284-.285.

.1140.605        The entrance side of the house, probably taken during the later stages of construction.  Jane Whitehead apparently sent this photo to a correspondent.  The back of the photo is labeled: “No. 2, The back of the house,” and there is a lengthy description of the different elements of the house (den, servants’ rooms, studio, etc.).  Although this was the back of the house, the main entrance was on this side.  What looks like a garage is actually the wood house.   n.d.

.1140.621        Modern print from an older negative showing the stoa side of Arcady, probably shortly after construction was completed.  A dog sits on the ground on one side of the house.

.1140.287-288      Two almost identical views of the stoa façade of Arcady, probably taken just after is was completed.  There are no plantings around the house.  The road leading to it is at the right.  A horse and carriage are visible at the left in .287.  n.d., probably mid-1890s.  (note: .287 is the same as .610, a mounted version found in Box 11, folder 1)

.1140.289        A view of the valley from Arcady.  A corner of the house is visible.  n.d., probably mid-1890s.

.1140.290,      (.305 & .306 are mounted.) A much later view of the façade of  Arcady.  Now trees,

.292,      bushes, and vines have been planted and cover much of the façade.  The boulders

.305,      in the front yard are visible.  n.d.

         .306

.1140.291        One of the small side porches at Arcady (probably the porch off Ralph’s den).  n.d.

.1140.296-       A view of the stoa and one side of Arcady. The small porch

.297        and balcony on the left side are visible.  n.d., probably late 1890s.  Both these photos are mounted on fabric and stamped on the back: Sturtevant.  (Other Sturtevant photos are numbered .293-295 and .309, and are in Box 11, folder 2.)

.1140.299        Another view of Arcady from the front yard with a low stone fence and the boulders visible.  More of the columned stoa and the left portion of the house are visible.  n.d.

.1140.303-       The stoa facade of Arcady taken from the road leading up to it.  n.d.

         .304

.1140.307-       The stoa façade of Arcady from the yard. Ralph, Jr., and his nanny sit in

.308        the foreground in the grass with a dog next to them.  Ralph, Jr., still wears a dress.  n.d. possibly 1900.

Box 3, Folder 3: W. H. Rough photographs of Arcady.

.1140.300        A facade of Arcady, showing part of the stoa.  Also of interest is the view of the mountains beyond the house and the boulders in the yard.  n.d., probably late 1890s.  Photo taken by W.H. Rough.

.1140.301        The exterior of the entrance facade of Arcady, showing the many sections and architectural details of this side.  Ralph sits on a square rock, probably a mounting block, with a small dog in his arms and another dog in front of the block.  Jane, in a short cape and long gown, stands nearby.  Her hat lies near her feet.  n.d., probably late 1890s.  A W.H. Rough photo.

.1140.302        The same entrance exterior of Arcady.  Ralph is standing, holding a dog, and Jane now has a large dog sitting next to her feet.  W.H. Rough photo.

.11140.624a    Same room as in .608 and .327 (in Box 11, folder 22), but with a different arrangement of furniture.  In this photo, the room looks more like a dining room than a sitting room.  A dining table and chairs are in the left foreground; a desk and chair are in the center background, and a sitting area is to the right.  This photo is mounted on cardboard.

.1140.624b      A small piece of a photo, probably the same photo as .624a.  This piece shows only the fireplace, the Madonna and Child plaque above it, and part of the dining table.

.1140.328        Interior of the Giglio (a separate building at Arcady, which Jane used as a retreat).  There is a fireplace in one wall with an inscription over it: “Tunc cede malis, Sed contra audentori ito. Qua tuate Fortuna sinet.”  The room is light colored stucco.  A wicker rocker and a wicker chair with pillows and a large vase sitting on the floor are located in front of the fireplace.  Many paintings, prints, dried and fresh plants and other items are hung and scattered around on shelves and the wall.  The floor is tiled. For other views of this room, see .329 and .330.  n.d.

Note: Chair on left: seat cushion appears to be covered in Morris & Co.’s Daffodil pattern.

.1140.329        The other end of the fireplace wall seen in .328.  There is a large wooden folding screen with tapestry panels, in the William Morris Honeysuckle pattern.  Next to an easel, there is an upholstered footstool with a woman's hat on it.  Several prints and paintings are hung on the walls or sitting on shelves.  (Some of these are in this collection.)  At the left side of the room is a wooden rack, which probably holds art (either originals or reproductions).  Two vases sit on the floor, and a large Native American-style basket sits on an upper shelf.  Jane reclines on a daybed in the background.  For other views of this room, see also .328 and .330.  (Photographs of the portrait of Jane in the frame hanging over the daybed are also in the collection, see .72 and .73, in Box 14, folder 7.)   n.d.

Box 5: Prints from glass plate negatives; modern slides; CD of photos

Note:               This box contains modern black and white photographs made from the original glass plate negatives.  Users are asked to use the modern photographs for their research.  The original glass plate negatives are stored in Boxes 6-10, and were given the accession number extension of “a.”  For each glass plate accession number, “b-c” are the modern photographs, and “d” is usually the original negative envelope (sometimes there is a third modern copy labeled d).  If a researcher wants a black-and-white photographic copy of a print, the Winterthur Photoservices Department will need to make an inter-negative and produce the photograph from it.  The researcher will bear the cost of making both the inter-negative and the black-and-white print.
