SERIES IX: CALENDARS, Jane Byrd McCall Whitehead

The calendars in this series were kept by Jane Whitehead.   The entries are brief: sometimes notes about the weather, her schedule, or what she was sketching.

Calendars for 1886-1887, 1889-1915, and 1924-1932 are in German, with the 1915 calendar noted as being from Bretano’s German Department.

Box 1:

Folder 1:          1886, 1887, 1888.

Folder 2:          1889, 1890, 1891 (both calendar and a note headed “1891 Highlights”).

[Note: The calendar for 1891 is not dated and researchers have disputed whether it is for 1885 or for 1891.  The calendar clearly marks March 29 as Easter (Auferstehung des Herrn, with Easter and Buona Pasqua added for good measure).  In 1891, Easter was on March 29, but in 1885, Easter was on April 5.  Thus, the calendar must be for 1891.]

Folder 3:          1892, 1893, 1894, 1895.

Folder 4:          1896, 1897, 1898, 1899.

Folder 5:          1900, 1901 (two for each year).

One of the calendars for 1900 and one for 1901 were kept for Ralph, Jr.  The 1900 calendar has his name on the front cover; the 1901 calendar for him does not have his name, but the first entry is about his teeth troubling him.

The handwriting for Mrs. Whitehead’s calendars and that for the Ralph, Jr. calendars is not the same.  Laid into Mrs. Whitehead’s 1901 calendar is a slip of paper listing when rooms were to be cleaned.

Folder 6:          1902, 1903, 1904.

Folder 7:          1905, 1906, 1908 (two for 1908).

One of the calendars for 1908 has the name Bim [nickname for Ralph, Jr.] written on front cover.  It has no entries after April.  Most of the entries duplicate those for Mrs. Whitehead’s calendar.

Folder 8:          1910, 1912, 1913.

Box 2:

Folder 1:          1914, 1915, 1916, 1917.

Folder 2:          1918, 1919, 1920.

Folder 3:          1921, 1922.

Folder 4:          1923 (home-made, labeled “Diary), 1924, 1925.

Folder 5:          1926, 1927, 1928, 1929.

Folder 6:          1930, 1931 (two for 1930, but one is blank).

Folder 7:          1932, 1933, 1934, 1935.
