HISTORICAL
STATEMENT
The Pettingell‑Andrews
Company was a leading manufacturer of lighting fixtures in Boston,
Massachusetts, for homes, churches, and public buildings. Its products represented a range of
decorative periods, but merchandise was placed into four categories: Colonial,
English, French, and commercial. Some
products were carried in stock, while others were made to order. The company had special departments devoted
to each of the processes required in manufacturing lighting, including:
modeling, chasing, spinning, plating, etching, and galvanizing.
SCOPE
AND CONTENT
The collection consists of 24 drawings and hand‑colored
tracings of lighting fixtures executed to a one‑quarter scale, measuring
three inches to the foot. Each drawing has an embossing from Pettingell‑Andrews
Company fixture studio in Boston.
Drawings are numbered for purposes of identification in the catalog;
however, only one of these illustrations corresponds to plates in the 1910
trade catalog. Such types of fixtures as
electric ceiling lights, electric chandeliers, electric brackets, and electric
pendants are represented.
This collection of drawings nicely complements the holdings in the Downs Collection of the Georgian Lighting Shops (Collection 103).
