BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
David M. Lank collected these caps when he was a boy
by writing to American dairies and asking for samples of whatever caps were
available. He assembled a similar
collection from Canadian dairies and donated it to the McCord Museum, located
in Montreal.
David Lank graduated from Princeton University in
1960. He has had various jobs in his
life, including working for the DuPont Company, serving as Deputy Head of
Operations for Expo ’67, chairman of the McCord Museum of Canadian History, an
investment counselor, and former Director of the Dobson Centre for Entrepreneurial
Studies in the Desautels Faculty of Management at McGill University. He has lectured at a number of universities
and has written a books and articles on a variety of topics, but chiefly focusing
on the art of the wilderness. He has
been awarded the Order of Canada.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
These milk bottle caps from about 500 dairies across
the United States are examples of mid-20th century advertising and design. Some dairies, like Damascus, came up with a
variety of graphic designs; others merely used text. Days of the week were frequently identified
with instructions about when the milk must be sold. Varieties of milk are identified, including
raw, pasteurized, tuberculin tested, chocolate, mellow, homogenized,
buttermilk, skim, butterfat free, Bulgarian, and kosher. Likewise there were many different kinds of
cream: whipping, light, heavy, coffee, sour, etc. Early lids for Dannon Yogurt are
present. Caps represent both large fold-over
tops and inner caps. Using inserts
inside large pleated caps permitted the manufacturer to print many patterns
without any dairy identification on the fold-over pleats. A cap with the name of the specific dairy was
then inserted. Samples used for sale
purposes are included in the collection.
Designs used include: Al Capp's shmoos by Sheffield
Farms, a silhouette of Abraham Lincoln by Lincoln Dairy, depictions of U. S.
Presidents, and a ship design by Santa Maria dairy. The Fort Lewis dairy
assured that its milk was Army tested. A
few of the caps came from the New York World's Fair in 1963. Some caps were for fruit drinks or cottage
cheese rather than milk.

DETAILED
DESCRIPTION OF THE COLLECTION
Location: 18 D 1
The bottle caps are not individually numbered. Most are housed in plastic sheets, which have
been numbered. The first digit in the
number indicates the box number, and the second number the sheet number, thus
2-31 is in Box 2, and is sheet 31. Sheet
4-15 is in Box 4, and is sheet 15.
After the index to dairies is found an index to
images. Most of the milk bottle caps
have just text, but sometimes an image is included. Then is found an index to other products,
such as cottage cheese, eggnog, and grape drinks. Most varieties of milk were not indexed.
Milk caps lacking names of dairies were not indexed,
unless an image or product needed to be indexed.
