BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

H. Graves was a Boston, Massachusetts, architect in the later half of the 19th century.  His name appears in the Boston city directories in the section for individual entries as well as the business listing.  He boarded at several different locales, including 7 Lathrop Place, 155 Court, and 77 Eutaw.  Early in his career (ca. 1857), he worked with Thomas W. Silloway at 121 Court St.  Silloway moved to Boston in 1851, studied for the ministry, and in 1862 was ordained a Unitarian clergyman.  After taking up architectural work, Silloway designed nearly 400 churches in New England.  Graves appears to have followed suit in designing churches.  By 1861, Graves' office was at 15 Congress St.  It is not clear whether he worked alone or for a firm.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The collection consists of eleven architectural drawings of a church in the Roman revival style.  One is signed, "H. Graves, arch. 115 Court St. Boston."  Drawings depict elevations, floor plans, timber structure plans, and designs for ornamentation.  Some of the drawings include instructions.  Details of the spire, bell section, and base of the clock are sketched.  Drawings are done on an 8 foot to 1 inch scale.
