BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

D. (David) T. Sanders and Company was a general store in Greenville, Maine, located on Moosehead Lake. A laundry blank from the 1890s noted that the store sold “dry and fancy goods, boots and shoes, rubbers, groceries, fruit and confectionery, ladies’ and gent’s furnishing,” and was an agent for the Piscataquis Steam Laundry of Foxcroft, Maine.  Judging by the orders sent to them, the store served the various logging camps and possibly trappers in the lake area.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This collection of papers can be divided into two groups: bills for items bought by the store and orders sent to the store from loggers.  The bills are for such items as liquor, clothing, fabrics, needles, gun powder, cartridges, crackers, and rubbers.  The orders from various camps were for flour, molasses, corn, tobacco, tea, clothing, hardware items, snow shoes, hides, footwear, meat, lanterns, and wicks.  There are also signed notes for the store to pay an amount of money to the bearer or person named and to charge the amount to the account of the signer.  A laundry ticket for D.T. Sanders & Son from the 1890s is also part of the collection.
