BIOGRAPHICAL
STATEMENT
The Vennard family lived in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The father Andrew Bell Vennard (1808-1857),
was treasurer of the Portsmouth and Concord Railroad, an inspector for the
local customs house, and a merchant ship owner.
He was the son of Dorothy and George Vennard. His wife was Ariadne Shapleigh Locke
(1812-1909), daughter of Hall J. and Abigail Underwood Locke.
The Vennards had a number of children, including a
daughter Abby Underwood Vennard (1841-1905), who was married to Gershom
Melcher, a Portsmouth, N.H., watch, jewelry, and silver dealer. Other children were Fannie Allen (1836-1915),
Andrew B. (1838-1869), William Lawrence (1843-1893), Emma Greenleaf
(1845-1906), Helen Bell (1850-1910; possibly the daughter called Nellie), and
Franklin Pierce (1851-1854). Fannie,
Emma, and Helen apparently never married and lived with their mother.
SCOPE AND
CONTENT
Most of the bills in the collection were made out to
Mrs. Andrew B. Vennard. They were for
many kinds of house furnishings, pottery, dry goods, groceries, tiles,
hardware, flowers, household repairs and upkeep (including hanging wallpaper),
medical and dental services, and personal items. The bills are on printed billheads, a few of
which are illustrated (primarily of stoves).
Most of the bills are from Portsmouth merchants, but a few are from
stores in Boston, Massachusetts. Also of
interest is an 1845 price list, also used for a bill, from the potters Crafts
