BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

The Lawrence Manufacturing Company was a cotton mill that operated along the banks of the Merrimac River in Lowell, Massachusetts. It was incorporated in 1831 and remained in business until 1926.  It was begun by brothers Amos and Abbott Lawrence of Boston.  Initially, it manufactured sheetings and shirtings, but later expanded into hosiery, knitwear, and underwear.

For awhile, George C. Richardson & Co. acted as a selling agent for the company.  After 1866, Townsend and Yale was a selling agent for the company, handling shirts, drawers, and woolen hosiery.

Henry Mitchell, the seal and die designer and engraver, was born in New York City in September 1837.  He lived in Chelsea, was a Mason, and died August 1, 1909.  He is listed in Boston directories at least as early as 1859 and as late as 1904.  His wife was Elizabeth A. Pratt, and they had four daughters.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection consists of bills and invoices that offer good examples of what textile mills needed to operate.  The bills record items purchased, including various parts for looms, temples, springs, hardware (screws, nails, etc.), brooms, sand, fulling soaps, tallow, bobbins, skewers, castings, spindles, belting, spools, lumber, labels, wrappers, paper, knitting winders, and office supplies.  Some other bills record repairs to textile machinery.  A number of the bills indicate the department or use to which the purchase was to be dedicated (bleaching and dyeing or general repairs, for example).  The invoices are for bales of cloth and hosiery consigned to shippers by the company.  Also included in the collection are two company seals, which were made by Henry Mitchell, a seal engraver in Boston.
