BIOGRAPHICAL STATEMENT

G. E. Leontine was a doctor in Dorchester, Massachusetts, who was interested in watermarks.  He formed his collection around 1930.  He wrote a paper about early New England paper mills and watermarks.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

Collection contains complete and incomplete manuscripts and pages from books, all gathered for their watermarks.  Often, documents were trimmed in order to fit into Dr. Leontine’s folders.  Paper in the collection, dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries, is chiefly of European origin but also includes some from America.  Many of the items feature Latin, German, or French languages.  Many pages were removed from books, and the dates penciled in on those pages are presumably the date of publication of the book.  Many of the pages are blank.
